New Mexico Passport Records
Collection
Identifier: MSS-184-SC
Scope and Content
The collection contains 2 items, the first of which is photoprint, indicating the names of 35 immigrants who arrived at the Territory of New Mexico on July 8, 1827. The document also indicates where they are from, where they passed through to get to New Mexico, their professions, and where they intended to establish residence in New Mexico. Immigrants to this territory came from Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, New Hampshire, and, in one case, England. All passed through Missouri. The professions represented include merchant, laborer, preacher, and carpenter. While most intended to settle in Santa Fe, others were destined for Taos, Rio Abajo, and Bado. A note to this document states that these 35 were among 84 "foreigners' who arrived "from North America to this territory,' though others were not recorded. The unidentified author of the note also sought advice regarding what to do with foreigners who introduce contraband and who have no means of subsistence. This document is dated July 31, 1827.
The second item in this collection consists of photoprints of records from a ledger (number 161) from Santa Fe, New Mexico. This appears to be a record of recipients of passports from the years 1833-1836. It lists the names of individuals, their destination, and the reason for their travel. In most cases, individuals were traveling to Chihuahua or Sonora, Mexico, for commercial purposes. Some individuals listed are unnamed servants, accompanying the passport holder. Though most appear to be from the United States or the Territory of New Mexico, passports were also issued to individuals from Germany and Prussia.
All documents are in Spanish.
