Scope and Content

This collection consists of documents pertaining to the sale and purchase of land in and around Bernalillo, Algodones, Placitas, Santa Ana Pueblo, San Felipe Pueblo, and Jemez Pueblo. Many of the papers relate to Pablo Montoya and to the Angostura area. The majority of the documents are in Spanish. One is in English.

Biographical Information

Julius Seligman, born in 1882 in Germany, came to the United States at the age of fourteen. He initially settled in San Francisco, where he worked as a clerk in a delicatessen for three years. He later moved to Bernalillo, New Mexico, where he worked in the Bibo and Company Mercantile owned and operated by Joseph Bibo and Company. In 1906, Seligman and his brothers (Sigfried, Carl, and Ernest) organized the Bernalillo Mercantile Company through the consolidation of the stores previously operated by Bibo and Company and by Isadore Frendenberg, of Bernalillo.

In addition to being known for his commercial interests, Julius Seligman is known for his service as Treasurer of Sandoval County as well as having been Chairman of the Sandoval County Board of Education. Still, Seligman is best known for his affiliation with the Bernalillo Mercantile Company.
