Sandia Pueblo Land Deed

 Collection
Identifier: MSS-122-SC

Scope and Content

The first item in this collection, the Sandia Pueblo land deed, is a photocopy of the original, handwritten legal document which outlines the transfer of land (whose exact boundaries are specified) from Pablo Salasar Noriega to the Sons of the Pueblo of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores y San Antonio de Sandia for the price of one thousand dollars. The document explains that Pablo Salasar's father, Antonio Salasar, was the original owner of this land, and guarantees the rights of his heirs to maintain irrigation ditches there. The document, from 1772, is signed by Lt. Baltazar Griego as well as Pablo Salasar, Joaquin Romero and Juan Gonzales. The original is housed in Folder 2.

The second item is a handwritten document, from January 30, 1830, which is a declaration of the debts and assets (including land and a house) of Lorenzo Gonzales. It appears, from this and related documents, that this was a custom of the time.

Documents are in Spanish, though a typed translation of the land deed is also included in the collection.

Historical Information

Sandia Pueblo, located fifteen miles north of Albuquerque, New Mexico and home to members of the Southern Tiwa ethnic group, has a long history of persistence in spite of conflict. The Spaniards documented this town as being populated by the Southern Tiwa as early as 1540, and certainly the history of the Tiwa there extends far beyond that initial documentation. The inhabitants of Sandia Pueblo participated actively in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, following which their pueblo was burned by Governor Otermin at least three times. At the time of De Vargas's reconquest, Sandia Pueblo was reported as abandoned, though this conflicts with an oral tradition that speaks to the people's permanence on this land throughout time. Written sources suggest that the pueblo was abandoned for several years, and resettled in 1748. One scholar notes that Spanish settlers were settled at or around Sandia in 1760.
