Scope and Content

The collection is comprised of ten ledgers of store accounts for Barela Mercantile Company, covering the years 1905-1925. The business ledgers are in Spanish with a few items in English. They list individual items purchased and give alphabetical listing of customers, including women.

Biographical Information

Eliseo Barela arrived in San Rafael, N.M. in 1881 from Perez, N.M. with his grandfather. In 1883 he opened the store, Romula Barela & Son; later Eliseo changed the name to Barela Mercantile Company. His store was the first licensed trade store in the area.
