Scope and Content

The in-progress collection contains research materials, images, newspaper clippings, interviews, historical documents, surveys, and correspondence relating to the New Deal projects across the United States, with an emphasis on New Mexico.

Boxes 1-4 contain information from cities and towns that have or once had New Deal artwork and architecture in New Mexico and the United States. A major component of these boxes is surveys and questionnaires sent by the New Mexico New Deal Preservation Task Force to various towns and cities to find and document New Deal artwork. These surveys often include photographs of the artwork as well as letters requesting funding for the restoration of the art. Folders contain historical information about New Deal buildings and artwork and biographical information on New Deal architects and artists, as well as brochures from organizations and cities that highlight New Deal history, as well as newspaper clippings of New Deal collections, exhibitions, and restoration efforts. Personal correspondence between Kathy Flynn and others concerning events, travel, her publications, and New Deal history are also included.

Boxes 5-6 contain newspaper clipping, journal articles, biographies, and historical documents related to artists who were commissioned by the Works Progress Administration and worked primarily in New Mexico.

Boxes 7-11 contain state guide books written 1937-1941, as part of the American Guide Series funded by the Federal Writer’s Project (FWP). Another box contains primary source books funded by the Works progress Administration outside of the American Guide series.

Biography/History

The National New Deal Preservation Association (NNDPA) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1998 to encourage and support nationwide preservation of art and other creations of the New Deal era. The mission of the NNDPA is to identify, preserve, document, and educate people about the legacy of the New Deal (1933-42) visual and performing arts, literature, crafts, structures, and environmental projects. Since its founding 1998 the organization has completed numerous successful preservation, restoration, and educational projects.

Kathryn Flynn founded the National New Deal Preservation Association (NNDPA) in 1998, a private, non-profit organization established to promote identification documentation, preservation, and education about the federally funded New Deal projects across the United States. Flynn, a long-time New Mexico resident, grew up in Texas during the Dust Bowl. Her career in public service began in the 1960’s, with jobs as a hospital administrator, foundation director, radio program host, and newspaper columnist

In the 1990’s she worked as the Deputy Secretary of State for Stephanie Gonzales and realized the immense amount of New Mexican New Deal buildings, artwork, and history existing in New Mexico. At that time, many New Deal buildings were falling apart, murals were being painted over, artwork was lost or unaccounted for, and she believed the United States was on the verge of losing some of its most important heritage. Flynn, with The New Deal Preservation Task Force created and sent out surveys to nearly every town and city in New Mexico so the New Deal artwork could be documented, and often restored. Flynn has raised awareness of the New Deal through advocacy, education programs, conferences, commemorative events, and tours.

Since 2002 she has been the coordinator of the New Mexico Chapter of National New Deal Preservation Association and the Executive Director of the National New Deal Preservation Association. She is a respected national expert on the New Deal buildings, projects, and artwork and in May 2016 she was named a “Santa Fe Living Treasure”.

She has published three books on the New Deal: “Treasures on New Mexico Trails: Treasures on New Mexico Trails: Discover New Deal Art and Architecture (1995), The New Deal: A 75th Anniversary Celebration (2008), and Public Art and Architecture in New Mexico 1933-1943: A Guide to the New Deal Legacy (2012).
