The collection focuses on environmental and social justice issues in northern New Mexico that Kay Matthews, her partner, Mark Schiller, and their publication, La Jicarita News researched and publicized. The collection is divided into 7 series:

  • Acequias/Water Adjudication: Aamodt adjudication, Abeyta adjudication, San Luis Valley water wars, lawsuits, water rights, water transfers, Taos County Regional water plan.


  • Forestry and Grazing: Ernest Atencio publications on environmental justice, collaborative stewardship, forest restoration projects, Forest Service permitting protests, lawsuits, projects.


  • Land Grants: Activism, GAO report, Town of Las Trampas.


  • Los Alamos National Laboratory: Nuclear workers compensation, lawsuits, Pajarito settlers, Bechtel, Regional Coalition of LANL Communities.


  • Native Americans: Sandia Pueblo land claim, Picuris Pueblo mica mine.


  • Miscellaneous: La Jicarita, Miranda Canyon, Abiquiu, Mora County drilling, Rio Arriba agricultural ordinance.


  • Media: Interviews with individuals including Ike DeVargas, Leonard Lucero (USFS), Chellis Glendinning, Tom Udall, Moises Gonzales, Navajo Sam, Crockett Dumas, Jerry Rodriguez, Estevan Lopez, Max Cordova, Joanie Berde, Diana Trujillo, Felipe Cordova, Robin Collier (KRZA), Joe Gutierrez, Michael Wolfson, Moises Morales, Richard Rosenstock, Mark Schiller.
