Scope and Content

From the Collection: This collection contains organizational documents, scientific reports, publications, news clippings, legal briefs and papers, legislation, correspondence, and ephemera from the Citizens Against Radioactive Dumping (CARD). The collection is arranged into the following eight series:

CARD - includes information and documents generated by and relevant to the organization itself, such as CARD newsletters, CARD organizational structure, funding proposals, meeting notes and minutes, CARD community organizing strategies, campaigns and events, CARD supporters and allies, organized opposition to CARD, and correspondence. A set of writings and documents sent to CARD from the late Frances Tyson (d. 2002), a resident of Las Vegas, NM and longtime supporter and friend of CARD, is also included in the CARD series. Mrs. Tyson dedicated much of her life to working for an end to nuclear weapons production.

WIPP - contains information and documents pertaining to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, including WIPP history; progress reports, timelines, and performance assessments of the WIPP; geology, hydrology, and other scientific studies of the site and its problems; transportation as it relates to the WIPP project; the WIPP wastes; WIPP politics and policy, including legislation specific to WIPP and legislators' positions on WIPP; litigation concerning WIPP; WIPP oversight and licensing (both state and federal); WIPP private contractors; and WIPP insurance and liability issues.

Department of Energy (DOE) - contains documents related to the DOE complex, including the national nuclear weapons laboratories, nuclear materials and weapons in space, nuclear energy, non-site specific nuclear waste, nuclear weapons testing, and public participation in DOE decision-making processes.

Miscellaneous - includes information on hazardous, non-radioactive waste, general environmental issues, science and the philosophy of science, war and peace, uranium mining, radiation and health, nuclear science, the US Department of Defense and the military, and big business and corporate abuse. A folder of ephemera is included in the Miscellaneous series and contains an audio tape, pins, stickers, a magnet, salt from underground at the WIPP site, pamphlets, booklets, small placards, postcards, business cards, and tickets from CARD benefit shows and events.

Alternatives - contains information on alternative energy sources, alternative living, Nuclear Free Zones, alternative organizations and platforms, organizing resources and information, and alternative campaigns and actions.

News Clippings - includes news clippings relevant to the work of CARD, and also includes a wide variety of clippings related to the many additional subjects that are part of this collection.

Publications - includes newsletters and magazines to which CARD has subscribed and/or those produced by CARD allies. The publications contain information about many of the issues that are of concern to CARD, and are organized in alphabetical order by name of publication.

Oversized - contains items that have been removed from the CARD, WIPP, Miscellaneous, News Clippings, and Publications series, such as meeting notes, posters, maps, a vinyl record album, news clippings, and magazines and newsletters.

Notes to the researcher: News clippings and correspondence are grouped in folders by decade (1970-1979; 1980-1989, etc.). Selected news clippings and correspondence are included in specific subject folders within other series, however supporting documents for specific subjects can still be found in the clips and correspondence folders, organized by decade. Some material is in Spanish.
