 File — Box: 1, Folder: 6

Scope and Content

From the Collection: The Henry A. Kiker papers are organized into two series. The first series consists of court cases arranged alphabetically by client's name. The second series contains legal and personal correspondence, arranged by date, 1879-1934, with undated correspondence at the beginning of the series. Series I and Series II overlap in that both maycontain correspondence relating to the same particular court cases.

The majority of the correspondence relates to legal cases that Kiker was involved with while he was a lawyer and a judge in Raton, N.M. There are a few letters in Spanish including letters from Juan B. Leyba about an accident at the Albuquerque and Cerrillos Coal Company in Madrid. (Corresponding information on this case can be found in the court cases series under Leyba's name.) Other correspondence and cases cover such New Mexico entities as the Maxwell Land Grant Company, Maxwell Irrigated Land Co., the town of Maxwell, Wooton Land & Fuel Company, and Floersheim Mercantile Company. The types of cases that Kiker was involved with include divorce, mental health, adoption, probate, real estate, and water rights.

Personal correspondence relates to Kiker's political involvements, including recommendations for political appointments, and comments on the political environment in New Mexico. A significant portion of the correspondence is between Kiker and C. L. Collins. The collection also includes letters from Howard L. Bickley, Kiker's partner in the law firm, Bickley & Kiker. Case related correspondence can be found in both series, although the court cases series predominantly consists of court and legal documents.
