Scope and Contents

  1. CD 1 - "Lawrence and Brett: A Friendship" Brett reads preface, part 1. Includes first time Brett meets Lawrence, describes farewell party Brett gave for Lawrence, other parties, reminiscences, etc. Some static. 1966
  2. CD 2 - KKIT Taos Radio Interview with Brett/Manchester, talking about Brett's family life, etc., 1967
  3. CD 3 - KKIT Taos Radio Interview with Brett/Manchester. Similar to above tape, 1967
  4. CD 4,5 - Interview at Manchester Gallery. Brett looking at her portrait on her 83rd birthday. Various topics discussed including Queen Victoria, Coronation of King Edward, Winston Churchill, Slade School, Katherine Mansfield, Lawrences, etc., [1967]. Original boxes labeled "Taos & Brett: A Friendship" with note on box 1: John & Brett: Note, I hurriedly got this much off to you. There's more editing to be done and there are several silent stretches where something later gets edited in. No opening announcements yet. Four more half hour reels are to be edited. It will take me every minute till Thursday night at 9:15 PM when the broadcast is scheduled to get it done. It all sounds very worth the work. This much anyway will give you an idea of how it's going. I'll phone on Thursday."
  5. CD 6 - Manchester/Lee Roloft interviewing Brett. Brett begins Tape 6 by talking about her nursery, girlhood, rearing, family life, autobiography, Bloomsbury group, becoming a bohemian, her relationship with her father, etc. Tape 7 focuses on spirituality/sexuality, including Lawrence, Indians, etc 1/5/68, 1/6/68
  6. CD 7 - "Good Ship Equitania"- Brett talking about the voyage with D.H. and Frieda Lawrence from England to NY and then from NY to Taos. Talks about first impressions of Taos, getting settled, the Lawrences, Mabel and Tony, Andrew Dasburg and Ida Raugh.
  7. CD 8-10 - Autobiography. Brett appears to be reading. Tapes 9 and 10 include the wedding of Emma Aimes, bomb at Brett's house, death/funeral of Queen Victoria, Brett's appendectomy. Tapes 11 and 12 discuss Brett's childhood (3-14 years old), No. 1 Tilney St., Roman camp - Pinky, Queen Victoria's jubilee, torchlight procession, Kaiser William, dance classes, Scotland, etc.
