Scope and Content
From the Collection:
The collection consists of 591 recordings of folk songs, folklore and local histories collected by Ruben Cobos from 1944-1974 in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Also included in the collection are about 270 additional recordings of selected music - a few from New Mexico, many from Mexico and Latin America, and others from Spain, Europe and the U.S. The recordings vary in quality between good, fair, and poor. They contain both musical and spoken content. Most recordings are in Spanish, however, a few are in English. Others are Bilingual or represent the use of Spanglish.
The informants are mainly from New Mexico and Colorado, with a few from California, Texas and Mexico. The collections focuses heavily on spoken Spanish, with examples of poetry, riddles, proverbs, legends, anecdotes, folk tales, mysteries, prayers, nursery rhymes, games, jokes, language use, tricky words, tongue twisters, memories, local history and family history. The Spanish songs include alabados, entriegas for weddings and baptisms, inditas, corridos and ballads, pastores, posadas, love songs, folk dance music, etc. Traditions of Los Juanes and Los Manueles, Penitente morada practices, including women Penitentes, Holy Week songs and activities and the role of the church, santos and fiestas in the lives of the people are also included. There are also several lectures on folklore, music and culture by Cobos and other scholars, including Fray Angelico Chavez, Charles Briggs, Alfonso Ortiz, Arthur Leon Campa, Marta Weigle, Guadalupe Baca Vaughn, Anita Thomas and others. Included also are autobiographical accounts by Ruben Cobos and his wife Elvira.
Songs and stories about and for children, their health and education are included. Although the majority of the information is about Spanish and Hispanic traditions, the collection also provides some materials by and about non-Hispanics and the relationship between the races. A small amount of stories and songs relate to Apaches, Navajos, Pueblos, Mexicanos, African Americans, and Anglos (gringos).
Songs and stories by or about males show them in every walk of life, as rich and poor, old and young, as husbands, widowers, fathers, sons, relatives, compadres, friends, orphans, opponents, collaborators, kings, princes, commoners, giants, ranchers, cowboys, shepherds, farmers, woodcutters, shoemakers, vendors, railroaders, hunters, priests, doctors, teachers, politicians, attorneys, meteorologists, soldiers, witches, simpletons, gamblers, murderers, drunks, adulturers and thieves.
Recordings by and about women add value and perspective to the collection. Females are rich and poor, old and young, girl friends, lovers, adulteresses, wives, widows, mothers, comadres, church attendees, housekeepers for priests, nuns, princesses, queens, teachers, curanderas, cooks and witches. Some of the characters found in the collection are Cinderella, Genoveva de Brabanate, Goldilocks, Delgadina, La Llorona, Doña Cebolla, Dona Fortuna and the Virgin Mary, as well as San Antonio, San Pedro, Bartoldo, Don Cacahuate, Juan Charrasqueado, Pedro and Juan de Urdemalas, Ali Baba, Don Dinero, Tio Botitas and others.
The collection contains descriptions, traditions, local history and songs for New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Missouri, Kansas and Mexico. There are references to the Civil War in New Mexico, the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II. Stories tell of superstitions, supernatural, unexplained phenomenon, balls of fire and light, lightening, a comet, the sun, moon, finding treasure, ghosts, devils and magic. Additional topics include traditional food and cooking, health and home remedies. Included also are stories and references to insects, animals, birds, fish and snakes, as well as floods and storms, and automobiles and airplanes.

CD III of III. Rael, 1971: Jose Rael, b. 1941, Picuris Pueblo, NM. Similar to CDs 72 and 73. Begins at 44:36 and ends at 64:32. Begins at 00:02 and ends at 40:42. 1. Chiste, Paloma Blanca y el buen pelotero (fair recording, joke, Juan Pelotero y el diablo, personal experience, humor, there was a boy named Juan who played ball very well and the devil appears to him and challenges him to a game, they made a bet and started playing, played for hours, the devil won and Juan had to go with him as a slave, he worked feeding and watering the horses of many colors. It was a big ranch that the devil had and Juan assumed that the devil was very rich); 2. Juan Pelotero y Paloma Blanca (fair recording, continuation of previous story, one day Juan sees a very pretty lady standing by the horses, asked for her name, she said Paloma Blanca, the daughter of the devil, and so the time passed, when they devil and his wife were gone, Juan would spend time with Paloma Blanca, he found a pila de oro, the gold would not come off of his finger, he covered his hand so that the devil would not see his finger, the devil knew he was hiding the gold ring from him, became very angry, beat the man, bruises everywhere. Paloma Blanca invited Juan to go swimming but he was embarrased to take off his clothes because of bruises, but he did and Paloma Blanca became very upset that her father mistreated Juan because she loved him, wanted to marry him. The Mom already knew that they were in love. One night Paloma Blanca runs away with Juan, left two beans to speak for her, the Mom figured out the trick, told the devil that Paloma Blanca had left with Juan, the devil became frustrated in searching for Paloma Blanca, abandoned the search, left his wife alone to find her. When the Mom found them they changed into ducks and she did not know it was them, the mother finally gave up and yelled out that she could stay with Juan but that she was never to return home); 3. Chiste, El buen guitarrista (fair recording, joke, humor, discusses difference in use of guitarero vs. guitarrista, guitar, the man tells his parents goodbye, goes out to make his own way, he walked all day and at night, headed toward a house. When he got there he was going to ask if he could stay the night but no one opened the door and when he knocked it opened a little so he walked in. He saw many guitars hanging all over the walls and he played a few of them and finally picked one that he liked and traded it for his own. When he tried to leave he realized the door was locked and he couldn't get out. He noticed a different door and walked into a second room with many guitars and the same thing happened, he again traded guitars and was locked in again. In the last room he found a snake and he was scared because he couldn't leave but he heard a voice saying that the snake was a princess who had been cursed by a witch and that if the man married her she would turn back into a princess, and so they returned to her kingdom and she told her father the king that she wanted to marry the guitarrista).
