Scope and Content
From the Collection:
The collection consists of 591 recordings of folk songs, folklore and local histories collected by Ruben Cobos from 1944-1974 in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Also included in the collection are about 270 additional recordings of selected music - a few from New Mexico, many from Mexico and Latin America, and others from Spain, Europe and the U.S. The recordings vary in quality between good, fair, and poor. They contain both musical and spoken content. Most recordings are in Spanish, however, a few are in English. Others are Bilingual or represent the use of Spanglish.
The informants are mainly from New Mexico and Colorado, with a few from California, Texas and Mexico. The collections focuses heavily on spoken Spanish, with examples of poetry, riddles, proverbs, legends, anecdotes, folk tales, mysteries, prayers, nursery rhymes, games, jokes, language use, tricky words, tongue twisters, memories, local history and family history. The Spanish songs include alabados, entriegas for weddings and baptisms, inditas, corridos and ballads, pastores, posadas, love songs, folk dance music, etc. Traditions of Los Juanes and Los Manueles, Penitente morada practices, including women Penitentes, Holy Week songs and activities and the role of the church, santos and fiestas in the lives of the people are also included. There are also several lectures on folklore, music and culture by Cobos and other scholars, including Fray Angelico Chavez, Charles Briggs, Alfonso Ortiz, Arthur Leon Campa, Marta Weigle, Guadalupe Baca Vaughn, Anita Thomas and others. Included also are autobiographical accounts by Ruben Cobos and his wife Elvira.
Songs and stories about and for children, their health and education are included. Although the majority of the information is about Spanish and Hispanic traditions, the collection also provides some materials by and about non-Hispanics and the relationship between the races. A small amount of stories and songs relate to Apaches, Navajos, Pueblos, Mexicanos, African Americans, and Anglos (gringos).
Songs and stories by or about males show them in every walk of life, as rich and poor, old and young, as husbands, widowers, fathers, sons, relatives, compadres, friends, orphans, opponents, collaborators, kings, princes, commoners, giants, ranchers, cowboys, shepherds, farmers, woodcutters, shoemakers, vendors, railroaders, hunters, priests, doctors, teachers, politicians, attorneys, meteorologists, soldiers, witches, simpletons, gamblers, murderers, drunks, adulturers and thieves.
Recordings by and about women add value and perspective to the collection. Females are rich and poor, old and young, girl friends, lovers, adulteresses, wives, widows, mothers, comadres, church attendees, housekeepers for priests, nuns, princesses, queens, teachers, curanderas, cooks and witches. Some of the characters found in the collection are Cinderella, Genoveva de Brabanate, Goldilocks, Delgadina, La Llorona, Doña Cebolla, Dona Fortuna and the Virgin Mary, as well as San Antonio, San Pedro, Bartoldo, Don Cacahuate, Juan Charrasqueado, Pedro and Juan de Urdemalas, Ali Baba, Don Dinero, Tio Botitas and others.
The collection contains descriptions, traditions, local history and songs for New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Missouri, Kansas and Mexico. There are references to the Civil War in New Mexico, the Spanish American War, World War I and World War II. Stories tell of superstitions, supernatural, unexplained phenomenon, balls of fire and light, lightening, a comet, the sun, moon, finding treasure, ghosts, devils and magic. Additional topics include traditional food and cooking, health and home remedies. Included also are stories and references to insects, animals, birds, fish and snakes, as well as floods and storms, and automobiles and airplanes.

CD II of III. Torres, 1971. Probably Tita Griego from CD 20. Begins at 00:36 and ends at 9:45. Story (good recording, a poor family takes their daughter out of school to save money, education, the eldest daughter tells her grandma that her parents do not love her, the girl ran away and was almost kidnapped by a bad man, she returned to their old house to retrieve her teddy bear, her parents found her and moved her back into the home, children, women).

Story, El que comia gallina no come postre (good recording, a poor family is going to receive another family as guests but hey did not have much food to feed them, the Mom tells her children to behave and to not eat the chicken or dessert so that the family would have enough food); 2. Story, Los viejitos y el marrano (good recording, the friend advises his friend to lie about his pig being stolen so that he would not have to share the meat with anyone, he agrees to do it but the friends steal his pig first); 3. Story, El consejo legal (good recording, chiste, humor, Elfego Baca, a man's garden was eaten by his neighbor's goats and he asks a lawyer neighbor for advice as to how to collect the money, the man later receives a bill for ten dollars for the advice he was given, lawyer); 4. Story, El chino y la plata (good recording, about honesty, a man receives a letter about treasure written in Chinese and asks his Chinese friend to read it for him, the man tries to steal the silver from his friend but in the end he loses); 5. Story, Los pescadores (good recording, a local man died and a few men decide to rob the tomb,grave, they were caught by two fishermen who were separating their catch at the cemetery, death, muerte); 6. Story, El borracho (good recording, a lazy man who drank too much alcohol, his neighbors were tired of taking care of him and his family, the neighbors decided to place him in a coffin and left him in the cemetery to scare him, he'd rather be buried than get up and work, muerte, funeral, death); 7. Story, El padre, el hijo y el burro (good recording, about a father and son and their donkey, they walk though a town and are judged by all and so they decide not to pay attention to what people say, cannot please everyone); 8. Story, El perico verde (good recording, a woman's husband vomited green, the woman tells the chiste to her other neighbor but says that he vomited a green bird, that neighbor tells another but this time says that he vomited two green birds, the rumor continued to change every time it was shared); 9. Story, Que rezo yo? (good recording, a little girl doesn't know what to pray about, the Mom runs home in fear); 10. Story, El que murio de susto (good recording, legend, true, this happened in 1960, the man did not respect the Catholic Church, he died of fright); 11. Story, Peso en mano, chivo afuera (good recording, about a man who tries to cheat another by paying him less for his goats); 12. Story, Juan Antonio y los venados (good recording, two deer); 13. Story, Un bien con un mal se paga (good recording, the rooster sang a sad song, moral, advice).
