Scope and Contents

Recordings of Mexican singers. (Some of these songs are on CD 227. Fair recording, these are commercial recordings, songs with instrumental accompaniment). 1. Hermanos Castro, La esposa infiel (The Unfaithful Wife, he was with a woman and her husband came home, he is scared, jumps in a chest, they begin to eat dinner, he is in agony, they go to bed, in morning after husband leaves, he jumps out of chest, mounts his horse, she offers herself to him, he declines and leaves, humor, women); 2. Dueto Americano, Elena y el frances (Elena and the Frenchmen, while husband Benito away fighting against French for Mexico's independence, wife Elena falls in love with enemy soldier Fernando of France, Benito kills her and lover, French Intervention, Maximilian, women); 3. Hermanos Castro, Delgadina (father of Delgadina wants to marry, sleep with his daughter, incest, she refuses, he has her arrested, she dies in jail, women); Tony Aguilar, La viuda abandonada (The abandoned widow, she thinks her husband left, but he is killed by a Frenchman, in the German war, she will wait five years before remarriage, she wears all black, all the men want her, women, see variations at CDs 227 and 240B); 5. Pedro Infante, first, La calandria (calandra lark sings her pain in a golden cage on balcony, a sparrow comes and falls in love, sets her free, she flies away, he looks for her but she doesn't remember him, he cries); second, El piojo y la pulga (the flea and the lice want to get married but they don't have enough corn, maiz, the weevil offers to share some of his, they worry about godparents, the mouse and another flea volunteer, after wedding the cat gets free and eats the padrino mouse and none of the monkeys are scratching); 6. Trio Calaveras, El hijo desobediente (disobedient son, fights with another boy against father's wishes, disrespects him, son loses fight, asks to be buried in unholy land, recognizes he is ungrateful, leaves his belonging to loved ones); 8. Trio Aguilillas, Corrido de Jesus Cadenas (Jesus wants to dance with his girl friend, huera Chavela, Chabela, light skin, hair, Isabel, she refuses to stop dancing with another,Jesus shoots her three times, one bullet hits, women, machismo, jealousy, death, muerte); 9. Corrido de Benito Canales (the government killed Benito Canales in the year 1900, when he was shopping for ink and paper to write a card to his beloved Isabel, everyone looks for him, a Mexican woman tells them where he is, when they find him, on horseback he yells that the Supreme Government should die, Father Capeyan attempts to pacify situation, the guard catches him, he is killed, muerte, revolution, war).

Amador Abeyta, b. 1887, Sabinal. NM. 1. El pescadorcito (song, compares God with a fisherman, beautiful, talented, fishes in lakes, Divine sir, celestial fish, I offer you my simple heart); 2. Levantada de Bartolo (poor recording, song asks that Bartolo wake up, get up); 3. Songs of Los Pastores, the Shepherds, Nativity, Christmas, Cancion de cuna (song, lullaby, says goodbye to Joseph, Mary, Baby Jesus, star of Bethlehem, asks for a blessing); 4. Despedida (similar to previous song, prays for eternal happiness, says goodbye to Jesus, De los santos la dicha); 5. El Coloquio del Nino Dios (conversation about the God child, animals and people exchange sounds at the Nativity, El indito, with Native American Indian chants, influence of the indita, rooster sings, mule is surprised by the splendor of the Child, the ox moos, Saint Joseph sees his son in straw, birth of Jesus, Navidad, Christmas); 6. Gloria a Dios en las Alturas (song, glory to God in highest and to man in the land, peace, shepherds, happiness).

Mrs. Jose de Leon Padilla, b. 1895, Tome, NM. (Songs of Los Pastores, shepherds). 1. Hermanos pastores (song, beloved shepherd brothers, let us walk this path); 2. Adios, Jose, Adios, Maria (song, lullaby, says goodbye to Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus, the shepherds go toward the valleys of Egypt, sleep, you little piece of gold for the night is cold); 3. Cuando por el oriente (song, when the aurora came out in the east, the Virgin Mary walked).

Ricardo Archuleta, b. 1878, Cerro, NM. Richardo Archuleta y su grupo, Los corderitos (poor recording, many singers, little lambs).

Ambrosio Archuleta, b. 1861, Mexico, now Tecolote, NM. Cuando por el Oriente (from Los Pastores, shepherds song, blessed Queen of heaven, Virgin Mary, they beg that you give your Son, with grand appreciation, he was received, birth of Jesus, Navidad, Christmas).

Ruben Cobos, b. 1913, Mexico, now living Albuquerque, NM. 1.Todos los Pastores (song, let us shepherds walk on this proposed path); 2. A tu rancho, pastorcillo (we walk to the ranch where the beautiful boy is, Nativity, Navidad, Christmas); 3. Duermete, ninito lindo (sleep, pretty boy, in the arms of love, while you sleep, the shame of my pain rests, you are safe in the arms of your mother, you will not be offended, birth of Jesus, in the arms of the Virgin Mary).

Florianita Sandoval, b. 1877, Martineztown, Albuquerque, NM. Song of Los Pastores, Navidad, Christmas. 1. De la Real Jerusalen (song, To Jerusalem, there was a shining star, for shepherds of Bethlehem); 2. Venid, pastorcillos (come shepherds to adore newborn in manger, three Magi, wise men, have come from the East); 3. Los corderitos (the little lambs walk over holy snow, crying, the sheep walk over holy snow from heaven); 4. Duermete, ninito lindo (sleep, pretty boy, in the arms of love, while you rest, the shame of my pain, you are safe in the arms of your mother, you will not be offended, Virgin Mary).

Mrs. Jose de Leon Padilla, b. 1895, Tome, NM. De la Real Jerusalen, Belen, Jerusalem (Part I, very poor recording, star of Bethlehem, birth of Jesus, shepherds, Los Pastores, Navidad, Christmas).
