Scope and Contents

Fedelina Martinez, b. 1903, La Valle, Colorado later to San Luis, CO. Wedding customs (asking for girls hand in marriage, speaker's boyfriend Felipe, and parents, Epifania and Eulalio Martine, came to her house with his padrinos Francisquito and Miquelita Martinez, brought a card and read it aloud to her parents Brijido and Floripe Espinosa). (Ella Martinez Vigil).

Ella Vigil, b. 1935, San Luis, Colorado. Peticion de mano (read, letter asking girl's parents for her hand in marriage, wedding, women. Card dated Feb 5 1926, With honor, respect, without obligation we present wishes of our son to contract an honest and legal matrimony with your daughter, through church, they request immediate response. Epifania then wants to talk first talk with Fedelina to see if she wanted to marry as well. (Note, recorded March 1, 1975).

Fedelina Martinez, b. 1903, San Luis, Colorado. 1. Preparations for wedding, marriage (family buys her white tunic, mantle, slippers, stockings, grey and black tunic, and a petaquilla, leather trunk, which her mother in law to be fills with under clothes. She cannot look at it until night before Prendorio, when two families meet, get acquainted, they would say recibame por su criada response, y yo por su servidor, then lunch in house of her parents, exchange of food. Alfredo and Julianita Jaques, are to be padrinos of wedding, the night before, future bride and groom sleep at their house, women in one room and men in other); 2. Wedding described, reception (couple and padrinos, go to church and are married, visitors wait outside with band and they follow them home, rest, lunch, rest, dance, dinner, rest, dance that ends at midnight. After busy day Pablo Medina, uncle, sings them a song, La Entriega, and the couple must face each other, and they are blessed).

Gilberto Guadalupe Medina, b. 1936, 38 years old La Valle, Colorado. 1. Entriega de novios (marriage song with guitar, as learned from his father, Pablo Medina, who sung this song for 60 years, creation of earth and of man and woman, Adam and Eve, God and Virgin Mary recognize the wedding, couple are sacrament like Saint Joseph and Mother Virgin Mary. Adam marries Eve, bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh. Priest asks them if want to marry they both say yes, Marriage by the altar, submission of the pastoral ring, a paternal proof of legal marriage. Asks couple not to abandon their commitment, betray God or one another, responsible before Divinity, husband and wife are united, for eternity, God conserve their faith like Saint Peter in the glory, profound mystery of Mother Virgin Mary, in true church, couple are veiled and presented, Holy water prepared for Padrinos, godparents. Parents should not be upset, padrinos obligated to give blessing to their ahijados, godchildren. He mentions names Fedelina and Felipe); 2. Compliments to guests in verse, (spontaneous, improvisation at end of the Entriega, announces his name, place of birth, Placita de San Francisco, in the south of Colorado, near San Luis, Colorado, colored tree, nogal at his house, sings at guest's house, mentions birth and death in the future, funeral, muerte).

Juan Chacon, b. 1907, San Luis, Colorado. Examples of dance music (there are many different people speaking on this CD, in a full room, most do not announce their name. After most verses there is a cheer and then a musical piece. First song called Bailaste mucho? Did you dance often? Instrumental played during a celebration, accordion and violin, many people laugh and clap. Second song is a waltz, gets faster more festive, light hearted, jovial as it nears end. Last song is a dancing song).
