Scope and Contents
Rael, 1974: Seledonio Romero, b. 1906, Ignacio, Colorado. Later lived in Vadito, NM. Juan Oso (Part II, see Part I at CD 230, folk tale, Juan Oso, part man, part bear, gets in a fight with El Negrito, a dark man. Juan and friends go to house of el Negrito, only Juan brave enough to enter, finds a princess who says there are two more princesses, they free all three. Also they help a sad silversmith make crowns for the queen and the three princesses. The king tells Juan if he obtains a crown for the last daughter he can marry her, he does, they marry, dance, and a house is made for Juan Oso and his bride).
Romero, 1974: Salomon Mondragon (Solomon Mondragon), b. 1902, Cordova, NM. (Very poor recording, parts clear, others problems). 1. Los bueyecitos (seven brothers bewitched, and sister, who saves them and marries a king, brothers are burned in the end, women, brujas); 2. Los tres hermanos (magical story, three brothers take three paths to find their future, find an empty enchanted city, a boy gives them magic apples, first two brothers eat them and disappear, third refuses, goes on, arrives at a laguna, lake, finds a girl and they want to marry. A crow appears, makes them promise to split with him what they have in one year, girl gets fat, and they must share her baby son with crow); 3. Brujas (a boy cannot sleep, sees a woman take out her eyes and remove her legs, turns into an owl, tecolote, witches, women); 4. Ali Baba y los ladrones, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Arabian Nights (two brothers, a girl, cave of thieves, treasure, thieves put number 9 on door to find Ali, same number of everyones' door, so fail, thieves come hidden in oil barrels to kill him, girl pours oil in barrels, kills all but one, later she stabs last thief, saves day, women); 5. Los astronomos (chiste, donkey predicts weather better than weathermen, meteorologists).
