Ana de Orona Peetz, b. 1954, La Constancia, NM, Valencia County. (Poor recording, see Cobos notes in folder). Un rezo (prayer, asks Virgin Mary that she receive the flowers and my heart, faith, religion).
Mrs. Maria Melinda Orona, b. 1922, La Constancia, NM. 1. Las doce verdades del mundo (The twelve truths of the world prayer, recited - 1. one holy house of Jerusalem, 2. two tablets of Moses, 3. three of Trinity, 4. four Evangelists, 5. five wounds of Jesus, 6. six candle sticks, 7. seven enjoyments, 8. eight choirs of angels, 9. nine months of pregnancy for Virgin Mary, 10. ten commandments, 11. 11,000 virgins, 12. twelve apostles); 2. Estacion de Nuestra Senora del Carmen (Stations of the Cross, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, this is a song, worship with a short prayer recited between each verse, passion of Christ, Holy Week, Semana Santa); 3. Ofrecimiento (recited prayer of offering, Virgin Mary of Mt. Carmel, your water fountain of wisdom, sacred Mother, is used by holy trees. Saint Elias, founder of Mt. Carmen, who gives fear to hell, scapular, for three days, don't eat meat); 4. Bendicion de la cama para dormir (bed time prayer, a cross protects the bed); 5. Creencias (beliefs, superstition, when a dog howls in the night, it's the devil, recites a short rhyming prayer, Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus, St. Isabel, Elizabeth to St. Juan). Jose Orona, b. 1912, El Cerro de Tome, NM. 1. Suceso (su abuelo rine con los indios Apaches, one day his grandfather and friend went hunting in Bernalillo, New Mexico, 1860, Native American Indians approached on horses and they argued for eight hours, a boy comes and shoots two arrows at same time, one hits him and the other his friend, his grandfather still doesn't leave, the Apaches finally leave at sunset, they didn't believe in fighting at night, because of bad spirits); 2. Los indios se roban a un nino (Native American Indians kidnaped his grandfather at age 8, cautivo, Indian captive, he escapes when he is 16 years old, and begins working for a rich family, he marries their daughter, they have a son - the father of the speaker, Mr. Orona).

Adivinanzas (three riddles, many patas entre patas, female duck, legs of a table and animal legs, Spanish homonyms, language; el escarpin, short stocking; almohada, pillow); 2. Aguinaldo, rezo (Catholic religious prayer said before Christmas, Virgin Mary, Mother of God, 20,000 angels to heaven, Holy Trinity, echame la culpa, guilt, foregiveness).
Mrs. Castulo Zamora, b. 1913, La Constancia, NM. Dichos (thirty one rhyming phrases, sayings, among them, shame, land, food and drink, gossip, family and friends, knowledge, success in life, farm animals, punctuality, Roman King, work, fishing, worth, hunger, courage, generosity, excessive desire).
Clarita Serafin, b. 1954, El Cerro, NM. (Good recording). 1. Entriega de novios (sad wedding, marriage song, dances, four roses for bride, groom and godparents. They wash their hands in crystal water, beauty of a bride, white dress, veil, crown. There is no longer mother or father, only husband and wife, goodbye to family. Godparents turn over bride and groom to their partners); 2. Corrido de Gabino Barreras (Gabino Barreras, without shame, no reason, a drunkard, he carried a loaded gun, shoes of botines or huaraches, with bottle of wine in hand, yelled Viva Zapata, is killed one night, death, muerte, song is cut off here).
Francisquita Sanchez, b. 1893, Tome, NM. (Good recording). 1. Chiste, Mi senora es coja (joke, play on words, language, a man bets another man that he won't tell an old woman she is crippled, other tricks her with two roses to choose, escojar and es coja); 2. Adivinanzas (twenty riddles, among them wheat, onion, bridge, cheese, cat on the roof, egg, talking shoe, comal y la olla, like the pot and kettle, fisherman and cotton, poor recording here, Mexico and the American flag, cemetery, sun and moon, tongue).
Fernando Salas, b. 1909, Los Chavez, NM. 1. Dichos (eighteen sayings, phrases, lost time, friends, worth, excessive desire, dummy and wiseman, knowledge, heaven, stars, good man bad man, speak your mind, St. John the Baptist, puntuality, spirit); 2. Conversacion (speaker and others, including Ruben Cobos were students together at University of New Mexico, good friends); 4. El ruido en el techo (he lived in Old town, was married, one day woke up early, heard a loud noise like something huge landed on roof, checked found nothing, 30 minutes later, his cousin arrives, says his grandmother had died, supernatural story, ghost story); 3. Incidencia de El bulto (a few days after grandmother's death, his house is full of family, they go to tell an aunt her sister has died, he and his cousins are playing with slingshots and harmonicas, suddenly they see something move in other room, from side of the room to other, a spirit, they begin to play again, they see it again, agree its their grandma in black with a rosary, their punishment for playing around, it appears a third time, and they begin to pray, ghost story).
