Scope and Contents

Seledonio Romero, b. 1906, Ignacio, Colorado. Later lived in Vadito, NM. 1. El buen pelotero (story, cuento, a young man is best ball player, no one can beat him. Devil, diablo, thinks he can. They make a bet, if boy wins devil will serve him but if he wins, boy will serve devil. They play, devil wins, boy goes with him. Many years later, devil lets him visit his family with three demands in three days - crops from granary for meal, axe from mountain to cut wheat, trigo and make bread, and tame a wild mule. Devil has a daughter named Paloma Blanca, White Dove, the boy falls in love with her, she goes with him and secretly takes little demons to do all the three demands for him while he eats. On last demand, the mule is the devil and the saddle is his wife, La Diabla, and the bit is Paloma Blanca. Since her dad the devil won't allow her to go with boy, she warns him and advises him to take a cross. He is able to tame the mule devil with cross. Next day boy leaves and Paloma Blanca sneaks out with him and tricks her parents with magic beans. Devil figures out trick and chases them, but the horse, Paloma and the boy go into a church, become a bell and its ringer. When devil arrives, ringer just says an adivinanza and devil goes home angry. Devil figures out the riddle and he goes after them again, they then go to a ranch, become an oat plant and an oat picker. La Diabla goes after them this time. They go into a lake, become a duck and a duckling. Paloma knows and tries to get ducks to swim to her. When they don't, she says her punishment is that the boy will forget her at family reunion. He does, and years later is going to marry someone else but Paloma turns into a paloma, dove and comes to speak to him, he finally remembers her and they get married, women, religion, marruage); 2. Juan Oso, Part I (for Part II, see CD 233, story, cuento of rich king with three daughters walking through the milpa, corn fields, one daughter is stolen by bear Oso and taken to his cave, she gives birth to a bear cub, named Juan Oso. When Juan Oso is older and stronger, he removes boulders blocking cave and they escape, Oso comes for them, Juan fights back and they escape to kingdom. Her father, the King, holds party and builds them a house. Juan Oso starts school, is very sad, students make fun of him, he kills one and is reprimanded. He leaves kingdom with oxen and finds two strongest men, Muy Aerio and Muy Acero, three go on journey helping people, fighting, building a bridge in next city, later, they find poplar tree, alamo, make camp and steal everything from those passing by, etc.).
