Scope and Contents

Zamora, 1971: Juan Marquez, b. 1892, Las Vegas, NM. (This CD repeats part of CD 236). 1. La gorrita magica (Part II, Part I is on CD 127 (story, cuento, old couple in country and three rich city boys pass while man milks his cow, they argue he has a goat, he says its a cow, later he sells them cow for only $12. Wife angry, plans to get cow back, makes a hat, says it is magic, has husband borrow $100 from friend and he gives it to restaurants and bars around city, so owners comply with trick that boys with magic hat can eat and drink free. Boys believe it, pay old man each $15,000 for hat, couple pays back money to friend double, keep rest and boys get kicked out of restaurants for trying to get free food by showing their hat, clever wife, women); 2. El borreguito sin asaduras (cuento, story, a doctor invites a boy, a liar, embustero, to travel with him, doctor asks boy to buy a lamb for them, while doctor sleeps, boy butchers it, cooks entrails, eats them, then cooks rest of lamb and wakes up doctor, when asked boy tells doctor that lamb didn't have entrails. They travel to a town, doctor preaches he can make any old person young, again asks boy to buy, cook lamb, boy again lies about entrails. An old couple comes by, pays doctor money for cure, are asked to gather wood for horno oven, when fire is made, doctor throws elders into oven, next morning they are young. Repeat same thing with lamb, boy and elders in each town they visit, they become rich. Later doctor gives liar boy all the money, warns him not to try to cure elders or to lie, boy promises, but then cooks lamb again and says it still didn't have organs. Then boy tries to make some old folks young, kills them by accident, doctor is angry, says he will fix his problem if he tells him truth about lamb, boy admits truth, doctor brings old couple back to life and youth, and boy never lies again); 3. La Cenicienta (fragment, Cinderella, New Mexico version of fairy tale, she dances with prince, chapin - slipper fits foot, ugly jealous sisters, following custom, she speaks to his parents to arrange marriage, needs a dress, Holy Virgin Mary, appears, gives her most beautiful dress, they marry, still live happily today, muy a gusto, women, marriage).

Montoya, 1971: Joyce Montoya. (Good recording) 1. El perrito que se fue con los ciboleros (great grandmother Consuelo Martinez told her this story, dog followed buffalo hunters and ate their left over food all his life, Great Plains, Los Llanos); 2. Chiste (from Santa Fe, makes fun of elders who do not speak English, language, humor); 3. Los dos compadres (chiste, one old man outsmarts another, wins bet); 4. La tia y el nino en el camposanto (fear, children, muerte, death, cemetery, funeral, tape ends with classical music).
