Scope and Contents

Montoya, 1970: Mrs. M. Montoya, b. 1905, Pena Blanca, NM. 1. Versos a Pena Blanca (folk poetry, poem in honor of the village of Pena Blanca, New Mexico, whose sons can trace lineage to Spanish conquistadores, history); 2. Adios, Pena Blanca (verses in honor of young woman Zenaida Aragon, from Pena Blanca, women); 3. Versos de chiquiao (fair to poor recording, she recites verses from the dance game valse chiquiado, folk poetry); 4. Tres hermanos (folk tale, three brothers seeking future, find a gold nugget, kill and bury younger brother, plant grows on spot, boy's voice sings out, two are punished for crime, murder, muerte, death); 5. Las hermanas envidiosas (a New Mexico version of Three Marvelous Things, from the Arabian Nights, three sisters, one marries king, other two jealous, try to get king to abandon and exile her, king learns truth, executes the evil sisters, unites his family again, women, marriage).

Padilla, 1970: Emilia Chavez, b. 1910, Los Padillas, NM. Parts of Emilia Chavez duplicated on CD 101. Good to fair recording. 1. Adivinanzas (six riddes, one about el ano and el mes, calendar, end of the year); 2. Rima infantil (nursery rhyme, las muchachas de don Juan); 3. El burrito (folk song, she recites part of song); 4. La esposa infiel (ballad of unfaithful wife, recited, women); 5. La cubanita (folk song, manlove for little Cuban girl, her parents refuse to give their permission for courting, women, marrige ); 6. Versos y rimas (folk poetry, love song, recited, one about flowers and going off to Mexico, leaving love behind); 7. anecdote (about the young man and cacique and money, candidates running for office in pueblo, politics, Native American Indian, Pueblos); 8. Adivinanza (riddle about calabaza, pumpkin); 9. Juego infantil, children (a different one that on CD 101, game about what is it, la pata como chulito); 10. Rima infantil (rhyme about the luna, moon); 11. Adivinanza (riddle about Antana, a girl, a mother, with a son married to her mother, let her father be free, family ties, marriage, women, possible incest?).

Anonymous female, Los Padillas, NM. 1. Adivinanza (riddle about una vela); 2. Verso (folk poetry about going to the dance of the Indio Manuel, Native American Indian, and eating tamales and chile, food, leisure).

Emilia Chavez, b. 1910, Los Padillas, NM. 1. Rezos (five prayers, one to Nino Jesus, Christ who died on the cross); 2. Verso humoristico (folk poetry about a boy who asked a girl for charity, which was a kiss, love, women, humor) 3. Oremos (Christmas prayer recited by childen, angelitos, going from house to house, asking for candy, gifts, etc., if not they will break windows and doors down, behavior, Navidad).

Mano Cacahuate (he and Mana Cebolla walking down railroad track to California instead of riding train); 3. Mano Cacahuate (he goes to work, get his pay check, loses it gambling).

Raby, 1971: Frank Nuanes, b. 1914, Old Albuquerque, NM. 1. La Llorona (legend, Frank's version, wailing woman Llorona lost her daughter and is looking for her, women); 2. El diablo suelto (relato, tells account of the Pope in Vatican Rome, found letter some time back, warning devil loose in world, after World War I he will rule the earth for fifty years, religion, church).

Raby, 1971: Eddie Gallegos, b. 1911, Old Albuquerque, NM. El final de San Marcial (fair recording, he sings and recites part of the corrido, ballad, 1929 flood, river, Rio Grande, New Mexico, only building left was Fred Harvey House, railroad, song cut off, see CD 196).
