Epifanio Gutierrez, b. 1885, La Jara, NM. 1. Conversacion (more about tortillas neshas, origin of word cochino, etc., that local New Mexico Spanish vocabulary is not bad, children should not be deprived of their Spanish language as learned at home, Bilingual, preservation of traditional Spanish, education, school, English language); 2. Judios (conversation, Spanish ninos no bautizados, before Hispanic children were baptised they were called judios by their parents and family, after baptism they became Cristianos, Christians, family, religion, church); 3. La estatua de San Juan (relato, statue of St. John, in church in Cuba, New Mexico, used to have a staff in one of his hands, a Mr. Leandro Serna worked on the torso of the santo so the arms moved up and down, image put on cross during Holy Week, Semana Santa, religion); 4. Dichos (he recites various proverbs, folk sayings, is age eighty eight, mind fails him sometimes, forgets, believes refranes, proverbs and dichos folk saying are about the same thing, says one Del dicho al hecho hay gran trecho, it is easier said than done); 5. El cometa (he saw Halley's comet in 1910, fire ball seen toward the West for several days, people believed the world was ending, that year he was age 25, then was in Arizona, astronomy); 6. El sindico (conversation, he and son Rudy, Sr., about Penitente organization, officer called sindico, caretaker, custodian, replaced the sexton of the regular church when latter not able perform his duties, mentions Onofre Garcia); 7. Penitentes (conversation, group very old, stood test of time, nowadays everything is changing, no more Penitentes active in Cuba, New Mexico, he describes Holy Week, Semana Santa as was in past in La Jara, New Mexico); 8. Luminarias (Christmas lights, he first saw paper sack luminarias in Cuba, New Mexico, not many years ago, but in the past villagers of La Jara made wood bonfires type of luminarias, put wood on roof tops of house, roof made of adobe, Navidad); 9. Calentadores (heaters, in his time people used both fogones de fierro, hierro, cast iron wood or coal burning heaters and adobe fire places, Indian corner style type, today people use natural gas heaters or heating systems, housing, construction); 10. Las manzanitas mejicanas (conversation with Cobos and son Rudy, Sr., about apples, in different parts of New Mexico two terms for them are manzanas mexicanas or manzanas americanas, etc.).
