Scope and Contents

Trujillo, 1971: Felix J. Trujillo, b. 1903, Raton, NM. 1. El huevo (three friends are travelling together and have one egg between them for lunch, one of the friends pronounces that the one that can speak the best French gets to eat the egg, each says a French word, last one eats the egg, play on words, language, anecdote); 2. Versos (two, a quatrain and six line stanza, love); 3. Dos vaqueros (two cowboys are out on the range, one of them has brought a raincoat with him saying he has it - just in case, when it starts to rain his friend exclaims -if I had only known - one just in case is worth - two if I had only known, ranching, weather, anecdote); 4. Verso (love quatrain, folk poetry); 5. Adivinanza (a riddle based on the name of one of three hunters who are hunting doves); 6. Un amigo en Wyoming (a man expresses in poetry how grateful he is that he has found a job in a sheep camp in Wyoming, labor, work, employment, during such hard times, shepherd, folk poetry); 7. Verso (quatrain about man's best friend being a bag with money, folk poetry); 8. Indita de Cochiti (good recording, one strophe from the folk song, about a man and a girl from Cochiti, but she does not like him).

Fernandita Jaramillo, b. 1917, Raton, NM. 1. Adivinanzas (five riddles, one about pan, bread); 2. Verso (quatrain about marrying a bald headed man, folk poetry); 3. Adivinanzas (eight riddles, one about the sepulcher, tomb, grave site, burial, funeral.muerte, death); 4. Chiste (anecdote, a man and his wife ask for lodging, were told only room for wife, not man, he said he will sleep on top of her); 5. El indio y su novia mejicana (a Native American Indian man marries a young Mexican girl and finds that she is not like God commands, the girl's mother tells the Indian not to worry, that the girl comes from a family of very large women, the Indian is satisfied with the woman's explanation, anecdote, women, marriage, wedding).

Adelina Jaramillo, b. 1902, Raton, NM. Cuento de un padre (a man and his wife steal and butcher a priest' cow, the priest asks the couple's children to tell on their father at Sunday's mass, the children's mother lets it be known that the children are going to divulge secrets about the priest having an affair with a woman, priest drops his plan, folk tale, anecdote, church, religion).

Carmelita Torres, b. 1913, Raton, NM. Adivinanza (one riddle about Holy Week, Semana Santa).

Donato Apodaca, b. 1898, Raton, NM. 1. Adivinanzas (two riddles, one about la vaca, cow); 2. Cuento de nunca acabar (nursery rhyme, about a rag doll cat that never ends).

Cobos, 1958: Felicitas Montano, b. 1893, Tome, NM. 1. Datos personales (more personal information, she sang in Tome choir for Father Ralliere and Father Alberto, she is very happy in her old age); 2. Dichos (recites sixty two proverbs); 3. Versos (thirty five verses); 4. Adivinanzas (three riddles, and more forms of folklore, see Cobos CC guide); 5. Me gustan todas (good recording, song about a man who says he likes all women except old hags whom he would burn with turpentine, malditas viejas de Barrabas, folk song); 6. Las golondrinas (good to fair recording, a nostalgic romantic song of lovers parting, folk song, swallows); 7. Una noche serena y oscura (good to fair recording, love song of the 1930's, the lover complains of returning home to find his girl friend married, the woman admits she still loves her former lover but she has to be true to her husband, Mexican American song).
