Scope and Contents
Parnall, 1970: Samuel Jaramillo, b. 1917, Albuquerque, NM. Juan Berumete (folk tale, a New Mexican version of the tale of two brothers, hero kills a serpent, snake, that was taking beautiful girls of the kingdom, hero keeps the seven tongues of the serpent to prove he killed it, women).
Davis, 1971: Cristina Rubi, b. 1913, Belen, NM. Los dos jovenes mexicanos (two Mexican Americans meet out in the woods and both think the other is an Anglo American, and both speak English, they discover that they both speak Spanish and chide each other for speaking English, language, anecdote).
Josefina Montano, b. 1897, Albuquerque, NM. (Josefina's daughter reads five folk tales told to her by her mother. 1. San Pedro y la enferma de muerte (St. Peter fails to take a sick woman into heaven because he took pity on her children, God proves to St. Peter that the children would have been provided for, moral tale, woman, family, muerte, death); 2. Dos pajaritos (a bird invites another bird to fly with him to South America, the first bird tells that by morning they should be there, God willing or not, on the way down South a hawk gavilan catches the bird that has made the statement, anecdote, moral tale); 3. La manta (see CD 115, folk tale, putting the grandfather out of the house, dividing the blanket between him and the father, who will also be kicked out someday, family); 4. Santa Monica (Santa Monica sees two prisoners and forms a hasty judgment to rescue them, God talks to the saint and proves to her that all things have been predestined by God, moral tale); 5. La bruja (a young bride wants to go to a sheep camp where her husband is working, a witch turns two rats into horses as both she and wife go to the sheep camp, later, a hatband that the wife has brought with her betrays her connections with the witch, angry husband kills the witch, witch story, women).
de Lara, 1970: Aurelia Gurule, b. 1893, Placitas, NM. Tres hermanos y tres hermanas (three sisters and three brothers go on a journey, at a cross roads, one of the brothers gets lost and is crushed almost dead, he is taken back home and brought back to life, turns out he is an enchanted prince, folk tale).
