Scope and Contents
Anonymous, 1971: Emmie Baird, b. 1916, Mexico and Albuquerque, NM. (Cobos guide says interviewer is Mary Lou Arguellas, 1970, Albuquerque) 1. Sopitas de miel (New Mexico Spanish version of the story of Cinderella, folk tale, Cinderella gets a gold star on her forehead, step sister gets a horn); 2. Pedro de Urdemalas (a priest and Pedro go to a neighboring town to celebrate mass,both are given dinner of which the priest is not given enough to eat, Pedro is sent to the kitchen to look for the bean pot, related humorous adventures involving the lady of the house, folk tale); 3. El lagarto (a large lizard threatens to eat a man who is cutting wood, the woodcutter saves his life by promising the lizard that his daughter will marry him, the lizard chooses the youngest of the three girls, the lizard turns out to be a prince, folk tale); 4. El piojo y la pulga (fair recording, recited, the ballad of the louse and the flea who want to get married except that they have no money, ballad, they are helped to have a wedding, marriage, by the ant, weevil, etc., but cat comes to wedding and eats the mouse, the best man, animal story); 5. Verso (fair recording, recited, quatrain used in the dance game of valse chiquiao, chiquiado, folk poetry).
Sousa, 1969: Aurelia Gurule, b. 1893, Placitas, NM. 1. Los bueyecitos (a couple have three boys who grow up and leave home, in their absence their parents have a baby girl who goes out into the woods and gets lost, she finds an abandoned house whose owners of the house turn out to be her brothers, a witch gives her some chile that turns her brothers into bueyes, oxen, she undoes the curse, folk tale); 2. La ranita puerca (two older brothers refuse, but youngest of three sons marries a frog that becomes a princess, brings honor and joy to him and family, women)
