Scope and Contents

Padilla, 1970: Emilia Chavez, b. 1910, Los Padillas, NM. 1. Las muchachas de don Juan (recites, folk song, words rhyme, girls beg for bread, pan, no les dan, don't get any, ask for cheese queso and get a bone hueso, and put them in the corral, women, children, language); 2. El burrito (recites, nursery rhyme about little burro); 3. La esposa infiel (good to fair recording, fragment, ballad, recited, man meets an unfaithful woman, who took him home, women); 4. La cubanita (fragment, recited, folk song, man asked for hand of Cuban girl, family not let him marry her, they send her to other side of the island, love, women, marriage); 5. Versos, (recited, folk poetry, about old woman bitting the snout of a burro thinking it is a membrillo, fruit, women); 6. Un cacique viejo y un joven (an old chief and a young man are campaigning for leadership of their pueblo, the question of money arises, old man says he has enough to fight the younger one, anecdote, politics, government, Native American Indian); 7. Adivinanzas (eleven riddles and one nurse rhyme, children, folk poetry); 8. Rezos, versos, adivinanzas, etc. (Emila and a man and a women, anonymous, exchange examples of New Mexico folk poetry, example Desde Mexico, ha venido buscando tinta y paper, para escribirle una carta, a su querida Isabel); 9. Rezos, adivinanzas, etc. (poorer recording here after, recited, prayers and hymns, example the Hail Virgin Mary, in Spanish, and hymns sung); 10. Versos, adivinanzas, etc. (five verses, two riddles, one about calabazas; alabanza to Madre, Virgin Mary) (poor recording); 11. Rezos, etc. (prayer to San Isidro, labrador, patron of farmers, water, acequia).

Trujillo, 1972: Emilia Salazar Trujillo, b. 1882, Raton, NM. 1. El padre que se queria casar con su hija (La burrita, a young woman runs away from home, disguises herself as an donkey, is found by a rich man's son who wants to marry her, folk tale, incest, family, women); 2. La hija en la vidriera (a young woman wants to become a nun but is hounded by a priest exploiting her and she rejects him, he tells her parents she has been dishonorable, her brother is sent to the convent to kill her, hears her story and sets her free, later she marries a king, women, religion, priests, abuse, see CD 102 for more of the story).
