Scope and Contents
Barajas, 1970: Isabel Aguero, Isavel Aguero, Arroyo Seco, NM. Good recording. 1. Sopitas de miel (folk tale, variation of Cinderella, for doing good deeds she gets a star, her stepsister gets a horn); 2. Pedro de Urdemalas (folk tale, Pedro eats the priest's boiled eggs, priest gets hand stuck in a pot, smashes against a woman, adventures, church, religion, women); 3. El lagarto (folk tale, to save her father daughter marries an ugly lizard who turns out to be a handsome young man, adventures, marriage, wedding, women).
Browne. 1970: David Fresquez, b. 1895, Picacho, NM. Good recording. 1. El tio Botitas (local history, Lincoln County, he is a successful cattle thief, never convicted, eats the cattle hide first, evidence, ranching); 2. Versos (folk poetry, limosna, two verses from La Limosnera, poeta); 3. Margarita y Andresito (anecdote, girl rebukes boy for calling her his girl friend, may have been read from a school book, youth, women); 4. El pato de Tomas (folk poetry, sad condition of his duck, which dies); 5. Un indio listo (anecdote, a clever hungry Native American Indian tricks a rich Spaniard into believing he has found gold, to learn more the Spaniard provides him with a free meal, anecdote, Spanish); 6. El compadre sordo (anecdote, chatting with a deaf friend, David is misunderstood, anecdote).
Lowe, 1972: Estanislao Garcia, b. 1892, Espanola, NM. 1. Fair recording. El bien y el mal (folk tale, three thieves confess their guilt to a theft, saves the hero from death, folk tale); 2. Aventuras de Almon (folk tale, the feats of Almon, sleeps with rattlesnakes, chop down huge tree, eats a room full of bread, etc.); 3. Los ladrones de jamon (folk tale, two travellers steal a ham from their hostess, at night the hostess replaces the travellers' loot with adobe bricks, like story of King Jamonin, King Adobin, women); 4. El muchacho que no mas dormia (folk tale, a young man who sleeps all day, is ordered by doctor to give a urine sample, it is accidently switched for that of a pregnant cow, humor incidents follow); 5. Part I, El embrujao (witch story, man is married to a witch, finds out that she eats corpses in burial grave yard, cemetery, at night, she turns him into a dog, later into a horse, death, women, marriage).
