Scope and Contents

Carrillo, 1971: Vidal Jesus Trujillo, b. 1885, Santa Cruz, NM. Good to fair recording. Atole con cuchara (Part II of same story, partly repeated, followed by three short hymns, several short sermons, including why man must replace the lion as king of the beasts.)

Carillo: Dora Medina, Santa Cruz, NM. Pipis y gallos (verses for children, hand game).

Ortega, 1970: Beltran Griego, b. 1896, La Joya, NM. 1. El hombre que se perdio en un revilion, anecdote (a man is caught in a snow storm, he sees a lion that is about to eat him, he turns the lion inside out and uses the lion's coat to escape from the cold of the snow storm, weather); 2. La venada y su vendadito, (anecdote man asks son if he can see a doe on the mountainside, said no but can hear her fawn sucking).

Ortega: Petra Griego, b. 1905, Bernardo, NM, North of Socorro. 1. Una mentira (folk poetry, a rhyme about a blind man writing, a mute speaking, and a deaf man listening); 2. Adivinanzas, three riddles, one about the toilet).

Ortega: Eduplio Ortega, b. 1916, Bernardo, NM. Tente bien, anecdote (a bronco rider decides it is better to use holding power than to depend on prayer).

Ortega: Anonymous, Bernal, NM. Male. anecdotes, adivinanzas, fair to good recording. (Cazando osos and El zorrillo; two folk songs, Tengo una novia and Ya la luna va saliendo, adivinanzas. Five short adivinanzas, riddles, one about el calcetin, the sock; two folk songs, Pobrecita de la palma and La mancornadora).

Martinez: Martinez, 1972: Sofia Martinez, b. 1909, El Guique, NM, near Alcalde. 1. El arbol descontento (folk tale, a shade tree, after being a fruit, pine and Christmas tree, is most happy as an old shade tree); 2. Lamentos de una hormiguita (animal fable, a little ant trying to decide which is the strongest force in nature); 3. El muchacho colegiante, college student (folk tale, after being away from his home a long time, a student forgets what atole means); 4. El pajaro carpintero (folk tale, a stingy woman refuses to give bread to a poor hungry man, is turned into a robin); 5. El cientista (a folk tale, an educated son, dad and the eggs, education, school); 6. El borreguero, (fair recording, folk song, life of sheep herder, hardships, humor); 7. El cuervo y la zorra, zorro (animal fable, fox tricks crow into dropping piece of cheese it is holding in beak); 8. Un medico de huesos (anecdote, men make a bet, try to convince the doctor that a man has two extra bones in his body); 9. La zorra, zorro y el lobo (animal fable, fox convinces a wolf to fish with his tail, so doing he discovers his is missing his tail); 10 La ranita, folk tale (Part I, two bad brothers and one kind one, find a frog, that asks them for help, young kind one agrees to help).
