Scope and Contents
Abeyta: Deluvina Velazquez, b. 1896, Los Ojos, NM. 1. Los siete hermanos (folk tale, Los bueyecitos, variant, see CD 62); 2. Consejos de San Jose (folk tale, man who works for St. Jose, man's wife, his son, three bits of advice, and how they play out, clever, long story).
Anonymous: Dolores Nunez, Dolores Nunez, b. ca. 1930, Albuquerque, NM. 1. El muchacho mal hablado, folk tale (a foul spoken youngster, bad words he says at a wake, funeral, death); 2. El cura y el pollo, folk tale, song in story, fair recording (a parish cook chants to a priest asking him how he wants his chicken prepared, the priest answers in a Gregorian chant, religion, church); 3. Matapiojo (anecdote, the lice-killer, nickname for a beating husband, wife get back at him, women); 4. El colchon de papa grande (folk tale, a vociferous son is told to be quiet, he tries to tell of a fire in his father's mattress, but is ignored, meanwhile it burns up); 5. El Santo Nino de Atocha (anecdote, villagers walk Nino around to show him dry drought in fields and ask Him for rain, and it floods, so then villagers walk Virgin Mary statue around to show her flood damage caused by Her son Jesus, religion, church, weather, santos); 6. Los viejitos impertinentes (anecdote, old man tells of all the women had in his lifetime, wife tells him of the man she is still going out with, women); 7. Dichos, adivinanzas y versos (twenty eight proverbs, eight versos and five riddles).
Anonymous: Pablo Benavidez, Sr., b. ca. 1881, Montoya, NM. Fair to good recording. 1. Indita de Cochiti (see CD 57); 2. Adivinanzas (two riddles); 3. La cucaracha (Mexican American music, popular contemporary tune, one verse); 4. Victorio mentado (indita, recited, incomplete).
Anonymous: Angelica Emilio, b. ca. 1933, Albuquerque, NM. Adivinanza (fair recording, a riddle about a duck and a cat).
Anonymous: Alicia Flores, b. ca. 1933, Santa Rita, NM. El cerro de Santa Rita (legend, Kneeling Nun, in an encounter with Indians, a soldier is badly wounded, a nun nurses him and falls in love with him, she asks her mother superior for permision to leave the order, is warned of the grave consequences but leaves anyway, is punished, her remains can be seen in the stone formation, women, religion, church, convent).
Aonymous: Luis Carrasco, b. ca. 1893, Central, NM. 1. Good recording. Diploma (anecdote, parents want daughter to finish college, she gets pregnant, leaves school, has a baby, giving her parents what they always wanted she names the baby Diploma, education, women); 2. Historia de Santa Rita (legend, Carrasco family from Santa Rita, site of a Spanish presidio, story of the Cerro of Santa Rita, and the Cerro de la Monja, Kneeling Nun); 3. Un cuento de Hurley, New Mexico (anecdote, family moves to town, no place for a lady, it consists of nothing but tents - play on word - herlay, women, language).
Anonymous: Carmen B. Ortiz, b. ca. 1912, Central NM. No se oye nada pa aca (folk tale, (nothing is heard over here, the church sexton who steals from the collection basket and the priest who goes out with a neighborhood woman, confession, church, religion).
