Scope and Contents

Sexton: Bernardita Ortiz, b. 1893, Bernalillo, NM. 1. La mona (proverb, female monkey bites into the covering of a walnut, throws away the edible part of the nut, moral maxim); 2. Relacion (mentira, tall tale, verse, cricket drinking wine, monkey and shark fighting and crows that carries a wheelbarrow on its back, animales); 3. Los trabajadores (anecdote, three men looking for work, when boss asks them their names, reply I am living, I will follow, and third, I'll be a fool if I stay); 4. Dicho, adivinanzas, versos (Bernadette and another man exchange bits of folk poetry, a proverb, riddle and some verses of the chiquiado, poor recording).

Sexton: Horacio Garcia, b. 1909, Corrales, NM. Poor recording. Maxima, el arbol que crece torcido, nunca su rama endereza (folk poetry, Spare the rod and spoil the child, children).

Sexton: Bernardita Ortiz, b. 1893, Bernalillo, NM. 1. Adivinanza, verso (riddle and folk poetry); 2. El del corral, cometela tu solo (off color anecdote, two men in a corral, play on words - dar parte, to tell or report, language); 3. Versos del valse chiquiado, chiquiao.

Sexton: Horacio Garcia, b. 1909, Corrales, NM. Poor recording. 1. El sordo (anecdote, humor, chiste, deaf man told one thing, thinks he hear something entirely different); 2. El muchacho perezoso (folk tale, young lazy man to be buried alive because he is so shiftless, worthless, trick, gets his funeral delayed, burial); 3. Los dos amigos (anecdote, two men die, one to heaven and one to hell, in heaven has to work very hard, few people there, in hell little work because so many people there, death); 4. El apostol trece (anecdote, apostles, the thirteenth apostle, artist painting the Last Supper of Jesus, makes mistake on number, hangs a sign on one saying - just stopped in for supper); 5. El hombre perezoso (folk tale, lazy worker, boss fed him well, but says after eating by tradition does not work, employment, job), 6. El santo de palo (folk tale, man has a large piece of wood, makes a water trough for his donkey and a wooden saint, sells the saint to a priest who asked what miracles the santo will perform).

Martinez: Mrs. Abedon Martinez, b. 1908, Springer, NM. La vaca robada (folk tale, the father, the boy, the priest, the stolen cow, and the priest's affair with the father's wife, religion, church).

Martinez: Abedon Martinez, b. 1909, Springer, NM. 1. Los viejitos y la Muerte (folk tale, variation of story of old man and wife arguing who wants to die first, burglar hears them, comes to door proclaiming he is Death come for them, neither wants to go, he takes their fat pig instead, see CD 26, women); 2. Los dos compadres (folk tale, two friends, one rich, one poor, poor one hides friend's serape, will find it for a fee, when does becomes a adivino - seer hero to friends, then king asks fake seer to find his daughter's ring, etc., see CD 20); 3. El adivino (folk tale, the deceiver, man puts deceiving friend in a barrel, tosses him in the sea, passerby hears him say I don't want to marry the princess, trusting man exchanges places with him in the barrel, is tossed into the sea and lost, the friend later see his deceiver friend alive with a herd of sheep, makes friend believe they came from the bottom of the sea).

Zamora: Federico Fructuoso Lara, b, 1899, San Patricio, NM, East of Ruidoso. 1. El sacerdote y el rey (folk tale, king asks a priest three questions, what can I do, what is my worth, and what am I thinking, priest can't do it, but priest's brother dresses as a clergy man and answers for him, religion, church); 2. The priest story continues, then El adivino, a folk tale).
