Maestas and Trujillo: Margarito Medina, b. 1894, Penasco, Penasco, NM. 1. Cuento de la india (reminiscence, father was Daniel Medina, mother Antonia Martinez, paternal grandmother Maria Griego; story of Native American Indian women and language, broken Spanish mixing up words about cow, calf and daughter); 2. Abuelos en Nuevo Mexico (tradition, meaning of La Llorona, La Chapatona, abuelo, grandfather figure, from Matachines dance, adults, discipline children, education); 3. Historia de Nuevo Mexico (local history, Picuris Pueblo, Tiwa, San Buenaventura feast,1680 Pueblo Revolt, San Antonio patron saint).
Maestas and Trujillo: Silviano Pacheco, b. 1907, Chamizal, NM., Taos County. 1. Los animales y la serpiente trampada (animal fable, fox and animals pin snake to tree, it tries to escape); 2. La guerra de los animales (animal fable, war of stinging insects, drive large forest animals to lake where surrender); 3. Dichos (proverbs, hands cleaning face, etc. and a thing can burn within without smoking); 4. Pedro de Urdemalas (folk tale, Pedro kills mother by overfeeding her chaquegue, tricks brother that he killed her, women, see CD 21B).
Herrera: Leandro Herrera, b. 1901, Chamita, NM. 1. El cuento de los dos hermanos (folk tale, one brother a priest, one a simpleton dimwit, priest can't answer the king's questions, but dimwit can, intelligent poor and lowly person, religion, church); 2. El negrito poeta (folk poetry, three quatrains from the famous local black poet, late eighteenth century, woman wanting his old stockings, his reply in verse, and girl who shocked by his insult to her, again his reply in verse, women); 3. Bertoldo (Part I, where he and family lived in the mountains, because of his wit invited to live in the king's court, asked to pay homage to king, etc.).
