Scope and Contents

Garcia: Aurora Thompson, b. 1903. La rana (animal fable, a frog and a hen, cackling and croaking).

Herrera: Rafael Chavez, b. 1898, Veguita, NM. 1. Versos (poor recording, folk poetry, seventeen verses, many from valse chiquiado, chiquiao, dance game); 2. Canciones (fair recording, ballads, corridos, three - Reyes Ruiz; El lavaplatos, the dishwasher, labor, work, employment; El contrabando de El Paso, drugs, illegal).

Herrera: Jose B. Torres, b. 1904, San Juan, NM. 1. Don Cacahuate, Dona Cebolla (anecdote, story of them migrating to the U.S. on foot, poor, when hungry Dona Cebolla eats an iron rail, he pulls her along in a tub, etc. Her alternate names here are Siforiana, Sifoyana); 2. Bertoldo (anecdote, getting him to pay homage to the King, building low door to pass under, he slips in backward; other adventures, with Cacaseno, etc.); 3. Dos hombres que necesitaban dinero (anecdote, two travelers out of money, try to swindle money out of a bartender).

Aragon: Jose Maria Baca, b. 1889, Belen, NM. Good recording. 1. El asno (animal fable, story is read, wishing to be a horse, the ass has its ears clipped, is happy until he sees a she-ass); 2. El pobre y el rico, folk tale (two girls, the poor one gathers her own flowers in the field, the servant takes the rich girl out in the coach and he gathers flowers for her, two girls see each other and wish they could trade places, women, children); 3. Bertoldo, anecdote; 4. Viaje de Belen a Rio Puerco, reminscence (trip, travel from Belen to the Rio Puerco, river, April 5, 1895, Viernes de Dolores, with herd of sheep, shepherds, cold, river frozen, oxen frozen, crew member frozen, weather, another man dies in fire at camp, tragedy, death, muerte, weather, winter); 5. Pedro de Urdemalas (folk tale, master, sells the pigs or hogs, lies about stuck in mud, only saved their ears and tails).

Aragon: Andres B. Aragon, b. 1922, Belen, NM. Good recording. 1. Las cabras y el lobo (folk tale, how the goats outwit the wolf, a ram charges the wolf and the horse kicks the wolf) ; 2. Los ladrones (reminiscence, his aunt outwits two burgulars, asks them if she can sing a song before they kill her, singing brings rescuers, women); 3. La Chana o la Juana (anecdote, father has two daughters, Chana and Juana, young man asked to marry one, doesn't match which one, marriage, women).

Anonymous: Anonymous, Valencia County, NM. Costumbres del rancho (fair recording, ranching customs, traditions, children, as child farming, foods, dipping bizcochito in wine, etc., ends with witch tale).
