Scope and Contents

Patterson: Bennie Valles, b. 1921, Veguita, NM. La abuelita y su nieto (folk tale, the North Wind, grandmother lives with grandson, poor, wind blows away last of their corn meal, North Wind gives boy gifts, one a club to beat the man who has stolen his other gifts, a tablecloth and sheep.)

Ortega: Matilde Luchi Ortega, b. 1918, Las Vegas, NM. 1. El muchacho ignorante (folk tale, story of boy, princess and his mother who tries to poison him, instead kills his donkey, crows and hunters, he doesn't get the princess but wins great riches instead, women); 2. Las hermanas gangosas ( anecdote, three girls who talk threw their noses dating three boys, eventually they talk and boys leave them, women); 3. Don Gato (mentira, good to fair recording, romance, song, between tomcat and she-cat, sung, he dies in fall from roof, is revived by smell of fresh fish); 4. Cantos de Los Pastores (good recording, song, Christmas shepherds play, Las Vegas, New Mexico).

Ortega: Epimenia Cotinola, b. 1913, Trinidad, CO, Colorado. Good recording.1. El tuerto que enganaba a las muchachas (anecdote, boy with one eye get many girls pregnant, father married him to a local girl, he complains she is not a virgin, nor is he she replies, women); 2. Un verso, un dicho, y una adivinanza (folk poetry, poem, proverb and riddle); 3. Cuentos de brujas (two) (witch story, a young man, who is a shepherd, his wife and his mother in law, a witch).

Davidson: Amadeo Lucero, b. 1903, Dixon, NM. 1. El pescador y el pez (La mala mujer, folk tale, man, wife and fish, who grants many good wishes to the woman, food, a better house and all, when she wants to be queen of the seas the fish rebels and takes it all away, women); 2. La campana de Atri (incomplete, folk tale, bell in Atri, Italy, rung for a poor suffering horse belonging to a general, king makes general take his horse home and feed him).
