Romney, 1970: Cruz Alvarez, b. 1898, La Union, NM, near Mesilla. Good recording.1. La Fiesta Panamericana, September 16; 2. General Pat Hurley y los mojados, Mexicanos, (anecdote, Hurley campaigning for U.S. Senator vs. Dennis Chavez, gives a talk in La Mesilla to Mexican immigrants, wetbacks, who do not understand any English, Mexico); 3. Emeregildo Guerra, captain (local history, Captain Guerra led militia of La Mesilla citizens against raiding Apaches, Indian scalps, customs of end of ninetheenth century, Hispano and Native American Indian); 4. Billy the Kid in Mesilla, (local history, Billy at school in Mesilla, teacher was Miss Mary Ann Richards, befriended the Kid, education, women, outlaw, also Billy in jail at Mesilla).

Pedro de Urdemalas en la gloria (folk take, Pedro dies, sneaks into Heaven, angers God who wants to turn Pedro into a stone. Fine with Pedro as long as stone has eyes to see Heaven).

Patterson: Libradita Montano de Herrera, b. 1887, Cuba, NM. Santo de mi guarda, rezo (prayer to guardian angel).

El caminante y el cazador (folk tale, young man wants most wonderful thing in the world - money, old man puts ointment on eye and he find $50,000, he come back asking old man for ointment on his other eye, goes blind loses everything, greed).
Patterson: Bennie Valles, b. 1921, Veguita, NM, Southeast of Belen (and Albuquerque?). Los tres hijos (fair recording, folk tale, song in story, variation of story of older brothers killing the youngest brother, twig on grave sprouts and sings of their crime, revealing their evilness, murder, muerte, death).
