Scope and Contents

Gonzalez: Rafaelita Gonzalez, b. 1916, El Prado, NM, Taos County. Good recording. 1. Tres hermanos (tres bolitas, folk tale, two brothers kill younger one, a talking flower grows on his grave, exposing the murder, death, crime); 2. El viejito y la viejita (relato, old couple falls into a pit, old man likes what he feels); 3. El dicho, proverb ( don't put off for tomorow what can do today); 4. El cuento del pobre y del rico (folk tale, poor man hunts two rabbits to serve for dinner for his rich neighbor, but wife eat them and has to scare off the guests, women).

Quintana: Enrique Romero, b. 1896, Nambe, NM. 1. Bertoldo (folk tale, he won't give homage to king, so is given many impossible tasks, fails and sentenced to death, fragmented); 2. Versos, from valse chiquiao; 3. El caballo prieto (folk tale, king and death of his favorite black horse); 4. El padre y el pastorcito (the king, his impossible test, a shepherd boy, and a priest, mistreatment of boy, church, religion); 5. Franque Chipora (folk tale, Franque, Muda Pinos - Pine Mover, Muda Cerros - Hill Mover, and a Black man, African American, Negro and a magic ear, adventures).

Romney: Cruz Alvarez, Cruz Richards Alvarez, b. 1898, La Union, NM, near Mesilla. Good recording.1. Los manitos (local history, the meaning of brothers, hermanitos, name by which Northern New Mexicans are known to people in Southern New Mexico, comparison of the Los Manitos tradition in terms of Biblical parallels, social function and village unity); 2. La Mesilla (local history, spoken, of NM, family history, meaning of La Mesilla, mention of Cerro de los Muleros, Robledo, Fort Selden, La Union. Account of political fight, gun battle between Democrats and Republicans, politics, some Republican families move to northern Chihuahua, Mesilla settlers established La Ascension and Janos, in Chihuahua); 3. Roman Vermudez (legend, leyenda, borreguero, father in law of Cruz Alvarez, padre politico, was a wagon master, tale of him as a boy sheepherder, sheep, in the Magdalena Mountains of New Mexico (chiste); 4. La fiesta de Gadsden Purchase, (local history, Gadsden represented American take over, fiesta offended the local Mexican American pride so softened and renamed Fiesta Panamericana, Mexico. Celebrated on September 16, dignitaries, fiesta queen elected, crowned, women).
