Scope and Contents
Martinez: Patricio Chacon, born 1893, from Cebolla, NM, probably near Tierra Amarilla, Rio Arriba County. Good recording. 1. El caballo que hablaba (folk tale, set near Tierra Amarilla, a bet and sale of horse at Jose Martinez bar, continued at Thomas Burns bar in Parkview, seller was a ventriloquist); 2. La esposa traviesa (folk tale, man, wife, and cow on trip to California, women); 3. Las brujas que bailaban (witch story, set at Manuel Gomez farm, in La Puente, New Mexico, unknown mysterious lights in pine tree across the river, unknown phenomenon, perhaps witches, bruja, but unidentified); 4. Las bolas de lana (witch story of Justo and Donaciano Montoya, of Rio de Chama, Medanales, a coyote with wool turns into an old woman with two balls of wool, bruja); 5. El nino en la milpa (witch story of Antonio Gomez, a corn field, and crying child with fingernails and adult teeth, that talks, bruja, children) ; 6. El sordo (anecdote, the deaf widower misinterprets a conversation he heard); 7. A trip to Mexico (witch story, Serafin Chacon, of Abiquiu, and Antonio Servulo go South to see a witch dance, brujas); 8. El padre Juanito (anecdote, story of a gang who cut off a donkey's penis and a nun in a convent and her slip of the tongue, women, church, religion); 9. La princesa encantada (folk tale, a prince marries a frog that turns into a princess, women); 10. El judio, el anglo y el mexicano (anecdote, Jew, Anglo American and Mexican swop stories of their brothers' strengths, Mexican brother so strong can smash two bulls together, Mexico, Jew); 11. La mula cargada de oro (anecdote, herder from Cumbres, Colorado, at a dance in Chama, says in Spanish he would give a mule loaded with gold for the eyes of daughter of Thomas Burns, she knows Spanish and her reply, women); 12. El perico (anecdote, parrot flies into a church and directs parishoners to their pews, bald heads over there, fat ladies in front, women).
