Scope and Content

From the Collection: Photographs taken during the War of Canudos (Conselheiro Insurrection) in the State of Bahia, Brazil, 1893-1897. Includes Army officers and troops, encampments, views of Canudos and the neighboring towns, captured "jaguncos" (the followers of Antônio Conselheiro), the exhumed body of Conselheiro, and prisoners of war. Some officers are named in captions. There is also a photograph of Flávio de Barros, "expeditionary photographer." Brazilian photo historian Gilberto Ferrez has attributed these photographs to J. Gutierrez, a Spanish photographer who worked in Brazil.
