 File — Box: 1, Folder: 2
Identifier: 2017-008-0031 to 2017-008-0060

Scope and Content

From the Collection: The collection includes 82, 8 x 10 inch, captioned construction view photographic prints of the canals portion of the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in San Juan County, New Mexico. This extensive series includes broad landscape and site views where irrigation canal work is underway, showing the path of the canal in the landscape, with embankments, massive concrete pipes, and siphon outlets and inlets.

In addition, most views include men at work in construction contexts. Represented are earthmoving and heavy equipment, working with concrete by assembling forms and placing concrete, and metal workers bending and welding the reinforcing steel and steel irrigation pipe liners. In a few instances there are close up or sequential views of aspects of the construction.

The captions consistently include photograph or project number, descriptive text, construction specifications, contractor, photograph date and photographer’s name. The photographs are ordered chronologically and by photograph number. The information "Canals -- Navajo Indian Irrigation Project, New Mexico" and "Specs No. DC-6460, Universal Constructors, Inc. Contractor" appears on almost all of the prints. The photographs are by Bureau of Reclamation photographers, whose names are recorded.
