 File — Box: 1, Folder: 1

Scope and Content

From the Collection: The Chilean Ephemera Collection has three series. The first contains ephemeral materials documenting the 2011 Chilean student protests. The second series contains 32 posters by Chilean artist Guillermo Nuñez. The third contains 23 arpilleras.

Series 1: Chilean Student Protest Materials 2011

Series 1 is comprised of materials related to the 2011 student protests that took place across Chile against perceived inequalities in Chile’s educational system. Using propaganda to target the Chilean government and its acceptance of for-profit educational institutions, the students produced materials such as photocopied pamphlets, fliers, and screen printed art that was distributed to disseminate their ideas and organize mass protests. The series also includes photographs of protest activities.

A 2014 addition of stencil and screen printed art, and photocopied fliers is in box 3.

Series 2: Guillermo Nuñez Posters 1970-1998

Series 2 is comprised of a series of 32 posters by Chilean artist Guillermo Nuñez that contains exhibition announcements as well as activist-oriented prints featuring the poetry of Pablo Neruda and Paul Éluard. The series also includes posters depicting the Pinochet-era Villa Grimaldi concentration camp, where Nuñez underwent incarceration and torture in the mid-1970s.

Series 3: Chilean Arpilleras 1970s-1980s

Series 3 is comprised of 23 textile arpilleras donated by Beverly Joy-Karno. The pieces were purchased directly from the women who lost family and friends during the military dictatorship. 7 pieces are from the women’s workshop, MACUL. MACUL was the first urban women’s workshop formed by the wife of President Frei, María Ruiz-Tagle. The themes are pacific.
