Scope and Content
From the Collection:
This collection consists of prints, negatives, slides, and proof sheets created by Eduardo Fuss beginning in the 1980s. Also included is one folder of manuscript material containing publication lists, resumes, and articles about Fuss.
The collection contains images depicting many of the smaller towns and villages in New Mexico including Abiquiu, Acoma, Algodones, Anton Chico, Arroyo Hondo, Bernalillo, Bisti, Camel Rock, Carlsbad, Chama, Chimayo, Cimarron, Cloudcroft, Clovis, Colfax, Columbus, Cordova, Crownpoint, Cubero, Cundiyo, Dexter, Dulce, Eagle Nest, Elizabethtown, Embudo. Espanola, Farmington, Fort Sumner, Galisteo, Glorieta, Hagerman, Jemez Springs, Lamy, Las Cruces, Las Vegas, Lemitar, Los Cerrillos, Los Ojos, Madrid, Magdalena, Mesilla, Ojo Caliente, Peña Blanca, Picuris, Placitas, Puye, Questa, Raton, Red River, Red Rock, San Rafael, Shiprock, Springer, Tome, Truchas, Tucumcari, Valencia, Villanueva, Watrous, and Zuni.
There are also images of the pueblos of Nambe, Pojoaque, Laguna, Santa Clara, San Ildefonso, Santa Ana, and Santo Domingo. Landmarks such as the Ghost Ranch, the Kit Carson Ranch, the Rancho de las Golondrinas, and the Mabel Dodge Luhan House are also represented.
Included are photographs of national monuments and parks: Aztec Ruins, Bandelier, Coronado, El Malpais, El Morro, Fort Selden, Fort Union, Kasha-Katue Tent Rocks, Pecos National Historic Park, Prehistoric Trackways, Salinas Pueblo Missions, and White Sands. The archaeological sites of Chaco, Gran Quivira, and Nuestra Señora de Dolores Pueblo Site are also represented.
The collection also contains images of recreation areas, rivers and mountain ranges are represented as well: the Rio Chama, the Rio Grande, the Sandias, the Sangre de Cristo, Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, Cochiti Reservoir, Frijoles Canyon, the Fossil Forest Research Natural Area, the Valley of Fires Recreation Area, the Galisteo Dam Region, and the Tularosa Valley.
And the following topics are depicted: amusements parks, museums, balloons, bed and breakfasts, gardens, cemeteries and funeral rites, chili peppers, Christmas scenes, churches such as the San Francisco de Asis Church and the Mission San Miguel, farmers’ markets, fiestas, petroglyphs, pueblo dances, ski areas, trading posts, and trains such as the Super Chief.
Series I: New Mexico
These files contain images from all over New Mexico, arranged alphabetically by name of city, community, or place. It includes photographs of cemeteries, churches, wilderness scenes, cityscapes, buildings, fiestas, pueblos, Christmas, landmarks, etc. This series is comprised of slides.
Series II: Albuquerque, NM
These files contain images from places around Albuquerque, arranged alphabetically, and include indoor, outdoor, and cityscape scenes. This series is comprised of slides.
Series III: Santa Fe, NM
These files contain images from places around Santa Fe, arranged alphabetically, and depicting indoor, outdoor, cityscapes, and outdoor scenes. This series is comprised of slides.
Series IV: Taos, NM
These files contain images from places around Taos, arranged alphabetically, depicting indoor, outdoor, and cityscapes scenes. This series is comprised of slides.
Series V: Black & White Prints and Negatives
These files contain images often found elsewhere in the collection. It also contains negatives and contact prints that were published in the New York Times. This series is comprised of negatives and prints.
Series VI: Published Pictures
These files contain Fuss published images in books, magazines, newspapers, guidebooks, calendars, pamphlets, etc. This series is comprised negatives, slides, and one large poster book
Series VII: Biographical:
This series contains Fuss' resume, magazine interviews, articles, and an index of published pictures.
Series VIII: Mexico
This series contains images taken in Mexico in Guerrero, Quintana Roo, and Sonora; as well as cities along the Mexico/US border. Files are arranged alphabetically and include images of University of New Mexico archaeologist Lewis Binford, people, indoor and outdoor scenes, cityscapes, scenic views, and ancient sites.
2019 Addition includes visual material from Fuss' estate, primarily slides, prints, posters, and reproductions which may duplicate material in other collection series. The order and labeling of the slides preserves drawer order in Fuss' office. Primary subjects include the Bisti wilderness, chile peppers, and scenic locations organized by city and state or country, featuring Argentina, Arizona, California, Maine, and Utah.
