Scope and Content
From the Collection:
Photographs taken by John K. Hillers for the Powell Survey, the Bureau of American Ethnology, and the U.S. Geological Survey in Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico between ca. 1872 and ca. 1882. Included are views of Canyon de Chelly landscapes and ruins, the Hopi village of Oraibi with food drying on rooftops, Santa Clara Pueblo and a waffle garden, Nambe Pueblo, the ruins of a cliff tower near Ft. Wingate, and Lemon's Peak (Utah). The albumen prints are affixed to brittle, foxed mounts and are somewhat yellowed. Prints are 10 x 13 in. or smaller and on a 16 x 20 in. or smaller mount.
