Scope and Content

From the Collection: Predominantly large format landscape photographs of U.S. West, including parks such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, and Garden of the Gods. California subjects include San Francisco and its Chinatown. There are a few photographs of missions in the Southwest. Of note is an image by Chase of the chief of scouts who captured Geronimo. Other photos of interest depict military personnel and facilities, including Fort Sumter. There is also a small collection of examples of photographic print processes. An oversize albumen print of an unknown mill (c. 1865) is housed in the Pictorial Collections map case. Some of the photographers represented in the collection are D. B. Chase, L. Wilson Clark, George Fiske, Herman Hoyt, William Henry Jackson, Carl Moon, C. R. Savage, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, I. W. Taber, Carleton E. Watkins, and H. B. Wesner.
