File — Large: Drawers, Folder: PICT 2000-007

Scope and Content

From the Collection: This collection contains 10 posters showcasing original art based on quotations about labor themes. The quotations date from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1990s, and are from a variety of sources. The posters were designed for an exhibition by 1199's Bread and Roses Cultural Project. The artists are John Collier (based on quotation by Carl Sandburg), Edward Sorel (George Baer), Milton Glaser (Nicola Sacco), Audrey Flack (Sojourner Truth), Miriam Wosk (Roberto Acuna), May Stevens (Lucy Parsons), Sue Coe (a sit-down striker), Jacob Lawrence (SEIU Local 535), Marshall Arisman (A. Philip Randolph), and Anita Siegel (Eugene V. Debs). The posters depict workers, union meetings, labor leaders, agricultural and industrial equipment and products, and images of oppression and poverty.

An accompanying book, Images of Labor, edited by Moe Foner (New York: Pilgrim Press, 1981) is available in the University of New Mexico University Libraries.
