Children singing at school, Fuengirola, Andalucia, Spain, 1993

 Item — CD: 2

Scope and Content

From the Collection: Virginia Ebinger made these recordings in the early 1990s while researching Spanish folk music, stories and games. She visited Spain, Mexico and England, and also Santa Fe and Santa Cruz, New Mexico, recording a variety of street festivals in her travels.

While in Spain Ebinger recorded folk dances and a chorus in Extremadura; Gypsy dances in Granada and Easter Holy Week ceremonies in Torremolinos and Malaga. She also attended the Holy Week bell ringing ceremony at St. Paul's Cathedral, in London. On another occasion she covered several Holy Week festivities in Oaxaca. Those from New Mexico are Christmas La Posada performances, entriegas, inditas and other folk songs from Santa Fe and Santa Cruz. There is also a tape of a discussion of Hispanic music in New Mexico.

The CD includes background information about song traditions and has live renditions of several wedding entriegas and inditas. The inventory is based on notes and comments provided by Ebinger. There are no introductions of the performers or descriptions of the music on the recordings. The casettes are unedited and have some gaps and background noise.

Forms part of the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music.
