Scope and Content
From the Collection:
Much of the popular music of Brazil came from poor neighborhoods and carnivals. The music is noted for its rhythms and combinations of local instruments. The songs stem from African roots, as well as Portuguese and European music traditions. Brazilian popular music can be traced back to the 1930s, when radio spread songs across the country and people danced to the songs in clubs everywhere.
This collection of popular commercial Brazilian songs contains vocals and instrumentals, and includes a wide variety of Brazilian music styles such as samba, samba-canção, samba-jongo, chôro, chôro carioca, canção praieira, frevo, bolero, valsa, valsa canção, baiaõ, cena baiana, macumba, beguine, chôte, polca, catereté, marracatú, and cena brasileira. Artists, bands, and orchestras represented in the collection were the leaders of the popular Brazilian music movement. They include Lucio Alves, Severino Araujo, Waldir Azevedo, Emilinha Borba, Raul de Barros, Gregorio Barrios, Silvio Caldas, Carioca, J. B. de Carvalho, Dorival Caymmi,Carmen Costa, Stellinha Egg, Djalma Ferreira, Gastoa Formenti, Carlos Gallardo, Radames Gnattali, Luis Gonzaga, Roberto Inglez, Leon Kaniefsky, Murao, Pedro Vargas, and Zaccarias.
Original vinyl recordings have been reformatted to cassettes.
