National Indian Youth Council and Student Youth Movements - Seminar paper and research proposal by Sterling Fluharty, 2001-2002
File — Box: 1, Folder: 6
Scope and Content
From the Collection:
The collection contains Fluharty’s research on the rise of Native American youth movements in the 1960s and 1970s. The National Indian Youth Council is at the center of this research. Research is in the form of student and professional papers as well as oral history interviews. Turmoil in Gallup, NM and resultant student activism following the death of Larry Casuse is documented via field notes and observations, albeit from an unknown source. UNM’s Kiva Club was a vehicle of student action and the Gallup Ceremonial and Ceremonial Association were targets of demands for Native American empowerment. Letters and diaries illuminate Fluharty’s time as a Mormon missionary in New Mexico and on the Navajo Reservation.
