US 82 (Riley Homestead) Project – Eddy County, NM These oral history interviews are part of a larger mitigation project that also included archaeological excavation and archival research. The project was part of required mitigation for a curve-straightening project on US 82 between Hope and Artesia, New Mexico. Shawn Kelley conducted the oral history interviews for Parametrix, under contract with the NM Department of Transportation. The interviews relate to the Riley Homestead (LA 99382) and associated acequia system (LA 140203). The goal of the project was to document a more complete history and a broader understanding of historic homesteading, community formation, agriculture, and irrigation in the Hope and Artesia areas of Eddy County, NM.
Cambray Bridge Modification Project --Luna County, NM Beginning in 2009 Parametrix staff, under contract with the NM Department of Transportation, conducted a cultural resources survey for proposed modifications to the Cambray Bridge on NM 549 in Cambray, NM between Las Cruces and Deming (Luna County). This historic bridge straddles the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. The survey area included the original Cambray townsite, a small settlement dating from the late nineteenth century to the early 1950s. The steel-and-timber Cambray stringer bridge is an excellent example of early bridge construction, and is the oldest remaining example of a railroad grade separation in New Mexico. Shawn Kelley led this oral-historical and archival research project, conducting formal oral history interviews with current property owners, local ranchers, descendants of Cambray residents, and former Union Pacific Railroad workers who lived in the area.
