Scope and Contents

Abstract: 10/15/2013, 10/16/2013, 10/16/2013 (Deloria only). In interview 1, tape 1, Deloria and Hart both discuss their personal backgrounds and how they ended up in the southwest. They discuss assumptions held against Native students regarding culture shock and educational performance. They begin talking about the UNM Law School and the movement to start recruiting Native people into the law program. In tape 2 of interview 1, they discuss the key players in developing the Indian Law Program and people at the Law School. They discuss issues regarding funding and scholarships to attract students to the program.

Abstract

Sam Deloria and Fred Hart were instrumental in beginning the American Indian Law program at the UNM Law School. This is the conversation with the two of them and the second interview is with Sam Deloria only. Sam Deloria is Lakota from Standing Rock and has been director of the Indian Law Program since 1961. Fred Hart is from Queens, New York. He taught for several years at NYU and Albany School of Law.
