Scope and Contents

Abstract: 1/31/2013. In tape of the interview, Imelda Baca discusses her family history and high school education. She outlines her professional experience and details the challenges of completing graduate work and parenthood. In tape two, she expands on her professional work as a teacher, special education teacher, and principle. She explains the importance of bilingual education and meaningful cultural education in the classroom. She concludes with insight regarding the role of family and the younger generation in influencing older generations to attend higher education.

Abstract

Imelda Baca is Hispanic/Mexican and Zuni Pueblo. She was born in Belen, raised in Tome, and has spent several years in Gallup and Los Lunas. She received her Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate from UNM. She has degrees in Business and Multi-Cultural Teacher Education Administration. She met her husband at UNM in 1974 and is a mother of five children. She taught at T-VI (now CNM) and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute(SIPI).
