Scope and Contents

Abstract: 6/22/2012, 6/25/2012. Tape 1 details Brugge's experience at UNM as an undergraduate in the Anthropology department and his arrival to Albuquerque in 1947. He discusses his early business endeavors selling Native American art and jewelry in Old Town Albuquerque. Tape 2 explores Brugge's experience at UNM and his early anthropological and ethnographic work on the Navajo Nation. Tape 3 focuses on specific topics such as Navajo/Hopi Land Dispute, land claims, and his role in creation the Navajo Studies Conference. In tape 4, Brugge discusses his publications, honors and awards for his work. He provides some personal perspectives about the role of anthropology in relation to Navajo Studies and people.

Abstract

Dr. David Brugge was an archaeologist/anthropologist who graduated from UNM with a degree in Anthropology and minor in Botany in 1950. He was awarded an honorary PhD from UNM in 2005. He is well regarded for his research and work with the Navajo Nation, Navajo history, and his expertise on the Navajo/Hopi Land Dispute and Bennett Freeze Zone. He founded the Navajo Studies Conference in 1986. His manuscript collection is preserved at UNM Center for Southwest Research.
