Scope and Contents

Abstract: 6/19/2012. Roseanne Willink details her experience and involvement in the creation of the Navajo Language Program at UNM. She discusses the various people who were involved in its inception as well as challenges they faced in institutionalizing Native languages at UNM. She broadly describes the development of Navajo language through various texts, programs and community initiatives in efforts to help preserve the language.

Abstract

Roseanne Willink has been a Navajo Language professor in the UNM Linguistics Dept. for many years. She has had 39 years of teaching the Navajo Language. She retired from UNM in May 2009. She is also an expert in Navajo Weaving and rugs. She is Diné from the Pueblo Pintado area of New Mexico. She wrote a book with Paul G. Zolbrod titled Weaving a World: Textiles and the Navajo Way of Seeing and has co-authored numerous books. She also was a primary consultant for various texts regarding Navajo stories and cosmologies.
