Louis Huning Journal, 1892-1893

 File — Box: 10, item: 4

Scope and Contents

Records flour mill grain receipts and shipments and "Water Rent," reflecting irrigation from the five (or seven) mile ditch excavated to supply water to the Huning Mill. By 1897, the mill was no longer in operation and these entries indicate that the Louis Huning was apparently selling (renting) water for irrigation to landowners with access to the ditch. Water rental is calculated at $2/acre, thus Teofilo Chavez had an initial charge of $39.00, reduced to $34.50 by reduction of the land to be irrigated, and paid "By work." Among others who worked off their water rents were:Jesus Maria Rael José Manual Castillo, Rafael Gabaldon, Ignacio Garcia, José Luis Garcia, Vicente Chavez & Gabaldon, Ramon Chavez, Manuel Gabaldon, Francisco Chavez y Arujo, Candelaria Gallegos, José Gallegos, Preciliano Gabaldon, Vicente Lobato, Juan Cordova, etc.
