This collection contains correspondence and documents related to Apache and Navajo affairs in New Mexico during the mid-ninetieth century. It is arranged into two series: Apache Relations and Navajo Relations. The Apache related materials consist primarily of letters written to David Meriwether, Governor of New Mexico and Superintendent of Indian Affairs concerning thefts and murders by Apache groups. It also includes the quarterly expense reports from Edward H. Wingfield, Apache Indian Agent. The materials related to Navajos contain correspondence to and from Henry L. Dodge, Navajo Indian Agent, which deal with trade issues, supplies and rations for Navajos. It also includes Dodges’ quarterly expense reports.
